Four Avondale students selected to assist in OU research labs
     Rochester, Mich. – Oakland University researchers will host four Avondale High School students chosen to participate in a National Science Foundation funded grant titled Project SMaRT.

     Piper Lehto, Lauren See, Kevin Yang and Sanjay Das completed a rigorous application and selection process that included interviews and a review of their academic record, as well as an assessment of their ability to conduct university level research with both Avondale and Oakland University faculty.

     Each student competed with undergraduate university and community college candidates from around the United States to fill one of eight laboratory positions. Having been selected, they will work one-on-one with research scientists and receive a stipend for the 10 weeks they will be working in OU laboratories.

     Projects will include:
  • molecular mechanisms of hypertension under the direction of Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences Amy Banes-Berceli;
  • telescoping carbon nanotube devices under the direction of Professor of Physics George Martins;
  • analysis of the mechanical bidomain model of cardiac tissue under the direction of Professor of Physics Brad Roth, and;
  • self-assembled multiferroic-nanostructures andstudies on magnetoelectric interactions under the direction of Distinguished Professor of Physics Gopal Srinivasan.
