Are You Enrolled in an HMO for 2013?
Are you enrolled in one of the following HMOs for 2013?
  • HAP Health Engagement Aspire
  • Blue Care Network Healthy Blue Living Rewards
  • Priority Health HealthbyChoice Achievements
If you and your spouse are enrolled in either the HAP or Blue Care Network HMO listed above, remember that each year you must both complete the on-line health risk appraisal and visit your primary care physician to complete the Qualification Form before the end of March 2013 to qualify for the higher level of benefits.  This is true even if you were in the same plan in 2012.

If you are enrolled in the Priority Health HealthbyChoice Achievements HMO, you and your spouse must both complete the on-line health risk appraisal and visit your primary care physician to complete the Qualification Form.  This can be done at any time during the year.  Please note that you will remain in the Standard level of benefits until both covered adults have completed the requirements and have a satisfactory score on the Qualification Form.

Flexible Spending Account Reminder
Claims for 2012 expenses for Dependent Day Care must be filed with Meritain no later than January 30, 2013.  Claims for the Health Care Account must be filed with Meritain no later than March 31, 2013.  Claims forms are available on the Faculty and Staff Benefits website.  Be sure to keep a copy of all claims sent to Meritain for processing.  Remember, money that is not used by the end of the year will be forfeited.

Retirement Plan Limits Increased for 2013
The IRS has announced new limits for the amount of money you can set aside for retirement in our 403(b) and 457(b) plans.  Beginning in January 2013, the annual maximum that you can contribute to your 403(b) or 457(b) plan is increased to $17,500 for each plan.  If you are age 50 or older, you can contribute an additional $5,500.  If you wish to make a change to your retirement contributions, complete the Retirement Salary Reduction Agreement found on the Faculty and Staff Benefits website.  The completed form should be turned in to UHR in room 401 Wilson Hall.  If you have any questions, please stop by to see us or give us a call at extension 4207.

 WHAT: Supervisors should begin the process by entering ratings and comments in the TEAMS (Total Employee And Management Source) system. Then schedule a meeting with the employees to discuss performance from the 2012 calendar year.
 WHEN: Between January 2 and January 31, 2013

 WHY: The performance review was created to encourage dialogue between employees and supervisors which will serve as a tool for job effectiveness, progress and growth. In addition, the review process will foster mutual understanding of job requirements and employee contributions, lend insight into what motivates optimal performance, and provide an opportunity for feedback regarding development and other career interests.
A new version of the TEAMS system will be implemented as of April 1, 2013. Incomplete reviews will be canceled. All completed reviews will be retained by UHR however; they will not be accessible to the employee or supervisor after March 31, 2013. Please print a copy if you wish to retain one for your records.

Beginning with the 2013 performance year, if there is any position or supervisor change within 90 days of the end of the year, the performance review for January 2014 will be optional.

New Reporting Required on 2012 W-2 Forms
As part of the Affordable Care Act, the University is required to report the value of employer-provided health care coverage on the 2012 W-2 Form that will be distributed in January, 2013. The amount reported must include both the portion paid by Oakland University and the portion paid by the employee. The value of the coverage provided will not be considered taxable income; however, reporting is required for information purposes only. Per IRS documentation, the purpose of the reporting requirement is to provide employees useful and comparable consumer information on the cost of their health care coverage. The amount will be reported in Box 12, using code DD on your Federal W-2 form for 2012. For additional information regarding the Affordable Care Act, visit the IRS website.

All Employees Should Verify Social Security Number on W-2 Form
The Oakland University Payroll Office is requesting all employees verify their Social Security Number on the W-2 Form when they receive it at the end of January, 2013. Please make sure the Social Security Number on the form matches the number on your Social Security Card. If you discover an error, contact the Payroll Office immediately at x3034 or

Overview of Online Resources for Managers
The AP Assembly will be sponsoring a presentation on how to better utilize the online resources available for managers. Topics will include the Manager's Toolkit, which takes a manager through the life cycle of an employee, and the Banner Resources portal, which contains valuable resources on using the various Banner modules. Guest speakers include Gail Ryckman and Vicki Larabell from University Human Resources. This program will take place on Tuesday, January 15, from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM in the Lake Michigan room. Beginning in 2013, training for the university's content management system (CareWorks CMS), will be moving to an online program. Individuals requesting access to a specific webpage or site will now be required participate in an interactive online training to gain access to the CMS. The new program is accessible by visiting

The online CMS training program will require individuals to concentrate on a series of instructional videos and answer short assessment questions in order to gain access to the requested website. Instructional videos and their assessments will be available for each CareWorks module in order to service all OU departments.

OU Moves! Formerly OU Walks! January 14 – March 1.
New, online tracking system to record physical activity you do throughout the day! No pedometers necessary; you just need to know how many minutes you participate in an activity. Those who actively participate throughout the duration of the program will be entered into a drawing to win prizes! You must register through the America Heart Association website This semester's theme is the Price Is Right Cliff Hangers! See how many times your mountain climber can climb the Price is Right Cliff Hanger Mountain! Watch your progress in the display case in the Rec Center!
