EXECUTIVE-IN-RESIDENCE SPOTLIGHT

LORI BIANCO, BIANCOCPA

Lori Bianco, Director of Perfect Service at Bianco and Company PLC (BiancoCPA), assists early-stage companies with properly aligning their finances as an Executive-in-Residence (EIR) at the Macomb-OU INCubator.

Lori has met with several incubator client companies to gain an understanding of their challenges in developing accounting systems with processes and internal controls. She is educating several clients on QuickBooks set up and application utilizing real, historical data. The goal is for the companies' financials to provide customized, accurate data for sound management decisions.

Lori has developed Bookkeeping 411 and 911 as two ongoing incubator training opportunities. The first is a group primer on general bookkeeping information; the latter includes 90 minutes of uniquely tailored one-on-one time. These sessions are both open to the general public.

MAC-OU INC HAPPENINGS
MAC-OU INC TESTIMONIAL FROM CLIENT COMPANY OMNICO AGV

My thanks to the incubator for all the support in getting the Michigan Business Accelerator Fund (BAF) award for Omnico AGV. I know everyone works hard at the incubator and hopefully these awards validate that the efforts put forth by the personnel at Velocity pay off. I would like to especially thank Mike Brennan for his support and guidance. He met with the Omnico team many times to help formulate and refine the business plan that was submitted as part of the proposal. He has also been very instrumental in lining up possible investors. Funding sources are absolutely essential to make the Omnico AGV plan an reality.

VISIT MICHIGAN DARPA ONLINE

The Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF) via the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) selected the Macomb-Oakland University INCubator (Mac-OU INC) to administer the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Federal Matching Program for the entire State of Michigan. The primary objective of the program is to increase the amount of federally sponsored (DARPA) research and development funding that comes into Michigan.

CURRENT DARPA CHALLENGES

One method by which DARPA funds projects in order to seed desired innovations is through competitive challenges. DARPA first implemented this strategy in 2004 with the creation of the Grand Challenge, in which contest teams developed unmanned vehicles to navigate a course for $1 million in prize money.

With application assistance from the Macomb-Oakland University INCubator, client company OmnicO AGV Inc. has been awarded $30,500 from the Business Accelerator Fund of the Michigan Small Business and Technology Development Center (MI-SBTDC).

Based in Sterling Heights, OmnicO AGV has developed an Automatic Guided Vehicle (AGV) that greatly increases the flexibility and accessibility in manufacturing and warehouse facilities. As improvement to the traditional AGV, OmnicO's AGV innovation has increased sideways and rotational mobility, includes a modular space frame system that allows for low cost fabrication and uses a proprietary navigation system that creates traction on any path.

This grant will allow OmnicO AGV to be well positioned to meet investor requirements for continuation of growth. Milestones include ownership of a unique IP and functionality of its four-corner transceiver technology.

"Supporting OmnicO's disruptive and innovative AGV technology is an exciting and perfect use of the Business Accelerator Funds. Their technology will improve manufacturing and warehouse logistics efficiency," Julie Gustafson, Mac-OU INC executive director, said.

BOOK REVIEW

"NEVER EAT ALONE"
BY KEITH FERRAZZI
REVIEWED BY JOAN CARLETON

The opportunities for networking are endless, from large events to smaller meetings. Thinking critically, do you take full advantage of these occasions? What are your tactics? Do you work to only find immediate and mutually beneficial contacts, or do you attempt to create actual relationships with as many individuals as possible?

These questions all lead to Keith Ferrazzi's main point, which is evident in the book title. One should never eat alone, or on a broader scale, take advantage of every relationship-building opportunity possible. Though a lot of points presented in this book may seem obvious, it is a great reminder of the importance of strong bonds and affiliations.

"He thought of relationships as finite, like a pie that can only be cut into so many pieces. Take a piece away, and there was that much less for him. I knew, however, that relationships are more like muscles – the more you work them, the stronger they become. "

It is interesting to note the similarities between this thought and Charles Duhigg's in "The Power of Habit." As mentioned in a prior book review, Duhigg states that habits are like a muscle and must be worked regularly to be strong. Imagine the power of making relationship-building a habit!

"Never Eat Alone" presents great food for thought. Don't just network, build relationships. Simply exchanging business cards does next to nothing. Instead, connect on LinkedIn, follow up with an email and be sure to connect again within the following month. Ferrazzi argues through specific examples that if you use these tactics and others, business and personal development will soar.
