Important reminder regarding July holidays
The July 4 holiday falls on a Thursday this year, and the University will be closed both Thursday and Friday.  All benefit eligible employees that are required to fill out leave reports will need to use a personal or vacation day for Friday, July 5.  See our official Holiday Schedule for more information.

Benefits Corner
Did you miss the FMLA presentation on May 7?
Representatives from our FMLA insurance provider, CIGNA, were on hand to answer questions about the Family Medical Leave Act and leaves of absence that all non faculty benefit eligible employees may encounter while at Oakland University. The presentation materials are available on the Benefits and Retirement Training page.  Please contact the Benefits staff at x4207 if you have questions about FMLA or other leaves of absence.

HAP Members to Receive New ID Cards
HAP is currently undergoing a system upgrade that will allow them to adapt to the changes coming next year to health care as a result of the Affordable Care Act. As a result of this system upgrade, new ID cards will be issued to all HAP members in July. The new cards will list your new HAP ID number, new group numbers and will no longer include PCP information. More information will be available in the coming weeks.

Priority Health Coverage Information
As you may know, preventive care is covered at 100% for all members of Priority Health. Those services that are defined as "Preventive" are very specific and are identified in the Preventive Health Care Guidelines found on the Priority Health website.  Please take the time to review the guidelines before visiting your PCP. You may also want to view a one-page summary describing the services covered at 100% when you visit your doctor to complete the Qualification Form.

Physicians see patients with many different medical plans. They may not be familiar with what each plan covers. It is your responsibility to know what your plan covers. If you have questions about your coverage, please feel free to stop by the Benefits Office in Wilson Hall.

Have a position to fill? Looking for the best candidate?
As a hiring manager, the Manager's Toolkit can be your best resource for getting that position filled without delay. When looking for a candidate to fill the vacancy in your department it can often be difficult to determine who might have the best combination of skills, experiences and personality to blend into your team. After all, you only have a small window of opportunity to meet and talk with the candidates.

Consider using a combination of closed and open-ended questions in your interview. If you ask a candidate if they have ever had to deal with a difficult employee, the answer could be as simple as yes or no. Instead, ask them to describe a time when they had to deal with a difficult employee or situation. That will prompt a more detailed response and give you an indicator as to how they handle themselves. The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. Here is a list of Suggested Interview Questions and Styles.

First Time Manager - Understanding a Manager's Role
Most new managers don't realize how much their new role differs from that of an individual contributor. Often, they have misconceptions about what managing entails, and they may be surprised to learn that the skills and methods required for success as an individual contributor and those needed for success as a manager are very different. This course describes some of the myths about management and their corresponding truths in order to clarify what managers really do. It also points to the typical demands and constraints of a manager's job. Finally, it describes strategies for dealing with common mistakes of first-time managers.
