Are You Enrolled in an HMO for 2012?

Are you enrolled in one of the following HMOs for 2012?

HAP Health Engagement (Non-faculty)
Blue Care Network Healthy Blue Living
Priority Health HealthbyChoice Incentives

If you and your spouse are enrolled in one of the HMOs listed above, remember that you must both complete the on-line health risk appraisal and visit your primary care physician to complete the Qualification Form before the end of March 2012 to qualify for the higher level of benefits. This is true even if you were in the same plan in 2011. If you are in the Enhanced level of benefits, you must complete the above process to remain in the Enhanced level for the remainder of 2012. If you are currently in the Standard level of benefits, this is your chance to move to the Enhanced level by completing the required steps identified above.

If you have any questions about your benefits, please contact the Staff Benefits office at extension 4207 or stop in to see us at 401 Wilson Hall.

Flexible Spending Account Reminder

If you are enrolled in the 2011 Health Care Flexible Spending Account, you had until December 31, 2011 to use your funds. Claims for the Health Care Account must be filed with Meritain no later than March 31, 2012. Claims forms are available on the UHR website at: http://www.oakland.edu/upload/docs/UHR/MeritainReimbursement.pdf. Be sure to keep a copy of all claims sent to Meritain for processing. Remember, money that is not used by the end of the year will be forfeited.

2011 Years of Service Honorees
In January, all Oakland University faculty and staff that were celebrating a benchmark anniversary were honored. Employees with 10 and 20 years of service were honored with an afternoon reception in the Banquet Rooms, while 30 and 40 years of service were honored with a dinner reception at Meadowbrook Hall. Congratulations to all of our Years of Service Honorees.

Women of OU Critical Difference Scholarship Fashion Show Luncheon and Fundraiser
The Women of OU Critical Difference Scholarship is awarded annually to students who meet certain criteria that include "single head of household" and "an interruption in education for a period of at least one year". For more information about the scholarship please visit http://www.oakland.edu/woudifference.
The Scholarship Committee is hosting a Fashion Show luncheon and fundraiser open for the campus community on Tuesday, March 27, 2012, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., in the Oakland Center Banquet Rooms. The theme will be "Escape to the Tropics" featuring a diverse group of models, from former Critical Difference Scholarship recipients to University Vice Presidents, who will model outfits from Parisian of The Village of Rochester Hills.

Giving Successful Presentations
At some point in your career, no matter what job you hold, you have probably had to create and give a presentation. For some people this skill comes natural, but for others it makes them anxious. You may not know what content to include in the presentation, or how to get your audience involved, causing you to become extremely nervous. This course is designed to help you become a better presenter. It will break down how to prepare a presentation, including the content that you should and should not incorporate. It will show you presentation basics, and explain how to choose which type of presentation to give for every audience. Lastly, it will demonstrate how to control your anxiety and environment, days and hours before a presentation. Altogether these tips should assist you in becoming a successful presenter.

Campus Recreation is Heating Up January!

Welcome to all of the new benefits-eligible members of the Recreation Center!  It has been exciting to see all of the new and returning faces in the facility.  Some have come to "check it out" and others to get a workout.  We encourage you to come on over and see what we have to offer.   Campus Recreation has lots of opportunities for members to get active and stay fit and healthy!  Here is a sample of some of the current and upcoming things going on for our members:

  • OU Walks!  Dominate the States:  Walking program for students and faculty/staff.  36 participants are currently walking their way through all the states in the US for prizes and improved health and fitness.
  • Biggest Loser Challenge:  13 committed and dedicated students and faculty/staff were accepted into the program.  Total weight loss to date…72.4 pounds and only two weeks into the 12 week program! 
  • Getting Started Right:  A new 4-week series of educational sessions to help faculty and staff get their exercise program started right.  All three sessions offered are full with 26 total participants Getting Started Right starting January 25th!
  • Group Exercise Classes:  60 faculty and staff have purchased group exercise FitPasses!  Classes are booming.  Campus Recreation currently has more than 500 participants actively participating in multiple formats of group exercise.
  • Indoor Triathlon:  Swim/water walk, run/walk, and bike for distance not time in our 3rd annual indoor triathlon on Sunday, March 4 between 9:00 a.m. and 12 noon.  Pick your heat and compete individually or on a team.  Registration is open now at the Rec Center Welcome Center!  Members and non-members are invited to participate.
  • Need a Fitness Center Orientation?  Call Rachelle at 370-4911 to schedule a one-on-one or small group orientation with our staff.  50-minute sessions are more than a tour!  We will help you become familiar with the equipment available in the Fitness Center and how to incorporate it into your personal workout.  Free!
  • Body Composition Assessments:  $5 includes the assessment and printout of information.  Next available date is February 6.  Drop in between 8-10 a.m. or 12 noon-2 p.m. or 4-6 p.m.  No appointment necessary. 
  • Massages:  One hour and half hour massages are available with our therapist, Joann Gregor.   Rates are competitive with the community.  Call Joann to book your appointment.  248-892-1242. Non-members are welcome to book appointments too!

February is American Heart Month!  Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US.  You can help prevent heart disease by making healthier lifestyle choices.  Learn the risk factors for heart disease and simple things that you can do each day to help prevent yourself from being a victim.  This session will have interactive components including blood pressure checks, BMI measurements, nutrition trivia and more!  Free to OU employees.  Please register on the Building A Better U website at http://www2.oakland.edu/wellness/.
