Leadership seminar touts benefits of safe, healthy work environment

Rochester, Mich. – From enhanced corporate reputation and employee retention and loyalty to increased profitability, cost savings, and adhering to legal and OSHA regulations, there are many advantages to implementing an effective workplace health and safety plan. Business executives and managers play a key role in demonstrating the importance of creating and maintaining such a plan.

Business leaders and community members with this goal in mind are invited to attend Oakland University's first leadership seminar on occupational safety and health from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27. During the event, business executives from companies such as General Motors, DuPont, Schneider Electric and others will share their insight and experience on achieving a high-performing safety program in a global business world.

Attendees will see first-hand how a world-class health and safety program can result in lower costs, higher quality, improved on-time delivery and more loyal and dedicated employees. With health care and other business costs continuing to increase, many business managers feel the time is right to review how a safety and health plan can help better control costs.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, each dollar an employer invests in a health and safety plan can save $4 to $6. Likewise, an OSHA report showed that employers who establish employee safety programs can reduce costs related to injury and workplace illness by 20 to 40 percent. This is no small amount, considering OSHA data that shows that businesses spend $170 billion per year on costs associated with occupational injuries and illnesses.

The leadership seminar, which will take place in the Oakland Room of Oakland Center on the campus of Oakland Unviersity, includes lunch and a tour of the new Human Health Building's state-of-the-art facilities. Sponsored by Oakland University's schools of Health Sciences, Business Administration, Engineering and Computer Science and OU INC, the event also will offer attendees a chance to learn how OU connects with and supports businesses throughout the region.

There is no cost to attend the seminar. Those interested in learning more can view a detailed agenda and speaker line up, as well as register to attend, online at oakland.edu/shs/osh. Interactive and printable campus maps are available at oakland.edu/map.
