OU welcomes four new Engineering and Computer Science professors

The School of Engineering and Computer Science is pleased to welcome four professors to the School's impressive collection of faculty.

Megan Conrad, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering
Megan Conrad received her Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from Marquette University in 2009. Her research interests are Ergonomics, Neuromechanics, and Rehabilitation Engineering. Her current research assesses human performance in healthy and disabled populations as it pertains to therapy and product design. Specifically, the research evaluates strength and power deficits in the hand after stroke and evaluates the neurological or muscular changes contributing to such deficits.

Brian K. Dean, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Engineering and Computer Science
Brian Dean received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Wyoming in 2012. His current areas of research are bioengineering, embedded systems, and computer architecture. He is interested in advancing preventive medicine by improving noninvasive diagnostic tools for use outside the traditional medical complex.

Jie Yang, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Engineering
Jie Yang received his Ph.D. in computer engineering in 2011 from Stevens Institute in Hobeken, N.J. He was a doctoral fellow in the Data Analysis and Information Security (DAISY) Lab at Stevens Institute of Technology. His research interests include cyber security and privacy, pervasive computing and vehicular applications, wireless localization systems, mobile social networks, and cloud computing.

Wenjin Zhou, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Engineering
Wenjin Zhou received her Ph.D. in computer science from Brown University in 2012. Her research investigates interdisciplinary and collaborative problems on powerful computational models, algorithms, image analyses and interactive visualization tools for imaging, brain and life sciences.

News and notes from across the School of Engineering and Computer Science.

Computer Science and Engineering

  • Dr. Mohammad Siadat received a two-year funding from the NIH to support the department's Engineering Biology student, Ms. Diamond Park, to promote diversity in health-related research.
  • Cheng-Seh Wu received an award from OU GCSR for his project "Trade-Off Analysis on QoS-Aware Dynamic Web Services Composition with Evolutionary Optimization."
  • Astrid Muriel WAINDJA YOUNANG, a Ph.D. in CSI student, has been awarded a Palantir Technologies scholarship to attend the 2012 Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing.
  • Ibrahim Khoury, Peter Levasseur and Jared Oluoch received GReAT award from OU GCSR.

Electrical and Computer Engineering

  • Dr. Mohamed Zohdy has been elected to the new Editorial Board of the International Consumer Electronics Times (CET).
  • Dr. Daniel N. Aloi presented 4 conference papers and co-chaired a session titled, "Automotive Antennas" at the 2012 IEEE Antennas Propagation Symposium in Chicago, IL from July 9-13, 2012.
  • Dr. Osamah Rawashdeh co-authored three papers with his students at two different conferences in July.
  • Professor Hoda S. Abdel-Aty-Zohdy served/participated at the 2012 IEEE NAECON Conference, July 26th, 2012 in Dayton, Ohio. She served as General Co-Chair and Member of the executive Committee for the 2012 IEEE National Aerospace and Electronics Conference. She was Track and Session Chair for "Bio-Inspired Systems and Cyber-Physical Applications." She was a paper reviewer. She also presented a paper and, with her graduate students from the Microelectronics & Bio-Inspired System Design Lab, co-authored two poster presentations.

Industrial and Systems Engineering

  • The ISE department's Institute of Industrial Engineers Student Chapter earned a Gold Award from the national organization for the quality of it activities during the past year.
  • What did you do on your summer vacation? Most of our ISE students spent the summer working on paid internships at various companies such as Chrysler, Faurecia, Yanfeng and the Crittenton Hospital Medical Center. "As an intern at a Faurecia Interior Systems, I did everything from supply chain management to optimization and improvement of plant operations" says ISE student Kimmy Romstad. Jacqueline Sinishtaj states "My main focus in Crittenton Hospital's Emergency Dept. was looking at improving the process involved in moving orders, samples and results between the ED and the Lab." If you want assistance finding ISE students for your company's summer internship or co-op positions, please feel free to contact Professor Robert Van Til (vantil@oakland.edu, 248-370-2211).
  • ISE students show their creative-side in their "unofficial" Youtube video for the Engineering Better Engineers Today Super PAC (suPporting A better ise eduCation). A link to the short video created by these "right-brained" ISE students can be found on the ISE Dept. homepage at: oakland.edu/ise.

Mechanical Engineering

  • The ME department hosted a summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. Student participants worked in teams on automotive and energy-related research projects in mechanical engineering and also took part in other activities such as industrial research lab and facilities tours, meetings with working engineers, conferences and seminars.
  • Prof. David Schall organized and hosted a Workshop at the OU Incubator on "Nanofluid Research." where faculty and students presented their latest work. Rebecca Lubreras, a PhD student in the Tribology area won the best poster award.
  • Amro Zaki, a PhD student in FAJRI, received a Certificate of Appreciation for co-authoring the Outstanding Computer Technology and Bolted Joints Technical Paper entitled, "Criterion for Preventing Self-Loosening of Preloaded Countersunk Head Threaded Fasteners" at the 2011 ASME Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference in Baltimore.
  • Prof. Sayed Nassar awared a $786,766 new contract from TARDEC for research in FAJRI for the period of October 1, 2012 to September 30, 2013.
  • Prof. Zissimos P. Mourelatos was a recipient of the 2012 SAE Excellence in Oral Presentation Award for the paper entitled, "A Nonparametric Bootstrap Approach to Variable-size Local-domain Design Optimization and Computer Model Validation."
  • Prof. Wang received two grants from Michigan Space Grant Consortium for the projects titled, "Quantifying the Effects of Cell Temperature on the Capacity of High Energy" and "Characteristics and Performance of Biomass under Various Mixture Compositions."
