Industry experts to lead Lean Principles and Applications course

Rochester, Mich. – The Lean Principles and Applications course offered by the Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) Department at Oakland University this fall will provide students a unique, industrial perspective. The instructors are actually founding partners of Sustainable Lean LLC.

Taubitz
In the course, Mike Taubitz and Larry Osentoski will stress that "lean" is more than a suite of business optimization tools – it is critical thinking developed to help engineers and others to identify and reduce or eliminate seven forms of operational waste.

Through hands-on, experiential learning framed with a common foundation of lean principles, students will develop the skills and strategies necessary for effective application of lean in a variety of professional settings.

With more than 60 years of combined organizational management experience that covers government, military and commercial work environments, Osentoski and Taubitz are working closely with ISE Department faculty and personnel from Oakland's Pawley Lean Institute to develop course materials.

Osentoski
Topics will include learning lean concepts and tools, developing team projects, performing lean communications, effectively using applied statistics and metrics within lean problem solving, and applying Plan Do Check Act (PDCA) to achieve truly lean solutions.

"Without lean thinking and skills, engineers are lacking foundation tools and skills," Taubitz said.

"My career has taught me that there is opportunity in chaos," Osentoski added. "Our goal in instructing lean is to provide a non-branded model of critical thinking based in personal integrity that is required to find these opportunities within yourself and your peers."

The Lean Principles and Applications course is open to both traditional graduate program students and area engineers looking to enroll as professional development students.

Those seeking further information should contact ISE Department Chair Robert Van Til at (248) 370-2211 or vantil@oakland.edu.
