Prominent political, business leaders to address Oakland graduates
Rochester, Mich. – Approximately 1,900 undergraduate and graduate students will participate in Oakland University's spring 2013 commencement exercises, scheduled for Friday, April 26, and Saturday, April 27.
Honoring the many and varied achievements of these students will be a number of distinguished commencement speakers, including Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne, Baroness Caroline Cox and U.S.
Senator Debbie Stabenow.
Known for his turnaround of Fiat and moving
Chrysler from bankruptcy to profitability, Marchionne has also served as
chairman of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association and
Swiss-based SGS, as a member of the Board of Directors for cigarette and
tobacco producer Philip Morris International and UBS, and as a member
of the Peterson Institute for International Economics.
Cox serves in the British House of Lords and is
founder and CEO of Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust (HART). Over a career
spanning three decades, she has advocated for a number humanitarian and
political causes, including enhanced opportunity for people with
disabilities, legalization of drugs, pro-Christian government and
opposition to the European Union.
Stabenow was elected to the United States Senate in
2000 and has served as chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee, and
as a member of the Senate Energy, Finance, and Budget committees. She
has advocated tax cuts for small businesses and initiatives to
revitalize Michigan's manufacturing sector.
Set to take
place in the O'rena on the campus of Oakland University, commencement ceremonies
are ticketed events. An unticketed live broadcast will take place in the
Banquet Rooms of Oakland Center, as well as online at oakland.edu/outv/commencement. The schedule for
commencement exercises is as follows:
- 7 p.m. on Friday, April 26 – All Doctoral and Masters Ceremony
- Commencement speaker: Sergio Marchionne
- 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 27 – School of Health Sciences and School of Nursing
- Commencement speaker: Baroness Caroline Cox
- 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 27
– School of Business Administration, School of Education and Human
Services, School of Engineering and Computer Sciences and Bachelor of
- Commencement speaker: Senator Debbie Stabenow
- 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 27 – College of Arts and Sciences
- Commencement speaker: Graduating Oakland student Michael Joseph Meyer
