Share Ideas and Connections at Mac-OU INC's I-Hub

Mac-OU INC is opening the doors to its Idea Hub (I-Hub) in an effort to aid collaboration between entrepreneurs.

Part of the process of becoming a successful entrepreneur involves knowledge exchange. To facilitate this, the I-Hub was created, a place for like-minded entrepreneurs to share ideas, resources and connections in an open-space environment. The I-Hub is the perfect coffee-shop alternative for startups and small businesses. Entrepreneurs can make the connections they need, all in a day's work.

Available hours for the I-Hub run Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. For $95 a month or $10 a day, in addition to connecting with fellow entreprenerus, membership includes the use of the building's mailing address, free Wi-Fi, and scheduled "Idea Meetups" to encourage collaboration.

Capital Raise Meetup: Let Mac-OU INC Show You the Money!
September 12, 9 - 10:30 a.m. (monthly series)


If you are a startup or early-stage growth-based business looking for funding, come meet and listen to capital expert, Mike Brennan. He will detail the various capital sources in Michigan, and talk about how to properly position your company to be qualified for private funding, including private equity, the angel network and venture capital, and/or public funding, including grants, pre-seed, micro-loans, and venture match.

Mike will provide a group presentation, as well as individually help each company present determine their needs.

New Startup Lean Program
Don't Just Become Lean, Start Lean!

Mac-OU INC is launching a new Startup Lean program in September as part of the OU Lean Diversification Program. The program will run for three consecutive weeks on September 11, 18 and 25, from 8 a.m. until noon. Breakfast and a mid-morning snack are included.

Startup Lean is designed to help startups get off on the right foot by learning how to use valuable Lean principles to be as efficient, creative and successful as possible from day one to full business maturity. In this class, you will learn: about Lean principles, how they can help startups, how to increase your value-added time, shorten your product development and supply chain processes, measure actual progress and ask customers what they really value. Attend this class to learn how to leverage human creativity, become agile and make your processes more efficient which will ensure more value-added time to do what you love to do - being an entrepreneur and growing in our great state of Michigan.

"Disciplined Dreaming: A Proven System to Drive Breakthrough Creativity"

Can you imagine a company that is bounding with creativity? There is a corner with Play-Doh and finger paints to get the employees thinking more right-brained. There are foosball tables and sand volleyball courts for when  the employees need to break away, and get back in the right mindset. Television screens display all the stats that are triumphs of the company. Walls are painted bright colors, desks are constantly being moved so no one gets too comfortable, and people dress up in costume and play practical jokes on one another. Most importantly, however, are the ways new ideas are generated, and the methods that are used to spark the creativity.

Perhaps this is a look into ePrize, as Josh Linkner is the founder. Linkner paints an ideal creative world for all companies to embrace, linking great tactics with a structured system for proven creativity. A jazz musician himself, Linkner links jazz music to business, and proves that business and creativity go hand-in-hand. Interviewing more than 200 thought leaders for this book, he paints a picture of "disciplined dreaming" in a 5-step process: Ask, Prepare, Discover, Ignite and Launch.

Each step include specific instructions on ways to develop the solution and move on to the next step. Readers learn methods to develop ideas, methods to choose which ideas are best, and tactics to ensure that all voices are being heard.

This book is a must-read for all those who love the work they do and aim to make their organization the best place possible, whether that be a small-town restaurant or a large Fortune 500 company. Linkner ends with one key take-away, which I hope will leave you thinking: all it takes is one idea. One idea can change your career, one idea can change the world. Run with it, with this book in tow.

VELOCITY HAPPENINGS
FastTrac

The highly-praised FastTrac entrepreneurial training series returns in September. Offering facilitator-led sessions, small-group exercises and guest speakers, the program provides entrepreneurs with critical planning tools specific to their own business. Two different programs will be offered:

FastTrac New Venture is a 10-week program for startup businesses and those thinking about starting a business. It will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Mondays beginning September 10 through November 12 at Velocity. The cost is $140.

FastTrac Venture Forward is an 11-week program for experienced owners or managers of businesses with at least nine employees and revenues approaching one million dollars. It will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Fridays beginning September 14 through November 30. The cost is $299.

Both are offered by the Macomb County Department of Planning and Economic Development and Michigan Small Business and Technology Development Center with support from the SBA, MEDC and MSU Broadband Technology Opportunity Program. This state-wide program was designed to assist the non-financial small business owner to achieve "Fiscal Fitness," strengthen their financial literacy and improve their ability to access the capital they need to grow their business. Topics discussed include identifying problems using your balance sheet and income statement, using the breakeven analysis to improve decision making, ways to increase cash flow, planning working capital to support growth of the small business, and how to keep your banker on your side.

Women in Defense Junior Horizon Award: Call for Nominations

Women in Defense (WID) Michigan Chapter is proud to promote the accomplishments of all Michigan female students in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). At the WID-MI Annual Black Tie Gala, WID will present the Junior Horizon Award to one female senior student who has achieved high standards in the STEM area. A small monetary scholarship, provided by donations made to the WID Michigan Chapter, will be awarded to the winner.

Stacey Frankovich
Market Development Manager

Starting at the incubator in June, Stacey is the new Market Development Manager. She obtained her B.S. degree from Baker College, and has worked in public education and event management. Stacey started her work with Oakland University in November of 2011, at the School of Business Administration (SBA). She worked on coordinating events for the SBA until her arrival at the incubator.

"Working for the incubator has expanded my knowledge in business and has given me the opportunity to meet and work with incredibly talented people. I am excited to be involved in all of the positive growth going on at the incubator," says Stacey.

Favorite Pastime: "I love to fish and golf with my husband, and as a family we enjoy camping, movies and playing cards or board games."

Last Book Read: "Cannery Row" by John Steinbeck (for her book club)

Favorite Food: Lasagna - just about anything Italian!

Best Oakland Memory: "I had the opportunity to meet and talk with Dr. Sylvia Nasar, author of 'A Beautiful Mind,' at the annual Gorlin Lecture in March."

Charlie is a purveyor of attention. He helps growing brands stand out from the clutter.

He opened the doors at Curve after being thrown out of several well-respected ad agencies. As a marketing strategist and creative director, he has delivered blue sky ideas and bottom line results for household names like Ford, GM, Boyne Resorts and Absopure as well as budding challenger brands.

Charlie's an unabashed lover of Detroit where he's actively involved in the social media and entrepreneur communities. Along with a handful of cool friends, he produces the annual TEDxDetroit conference.

When he's not building brands, you'll find Charlie inspiring, educating and entertaining audiences with his lively keynote presentations on marketing and innovation. Last year, he was named the second best PowerPoint Karaoke presenter in the world. This year, he hopes to win something that people have actually heard of.

Charlie is happily married to his unhappily married wife, Elena. They have two young sons with wild imaginations and boundless energy and one lazy cat.

John Carter is a principal member at Witzke Berry Carter & Wander PLLC and leads the "Business Law and Commercial Transactions" group. He has been practicing business and commercial law for 18 years and focuses on assisting Michigan entrepreneurs with business formation, commercial transactions, licensing and franchises. and business succession planning.

Carter is an active member of the Business Law and Unincorporated Enterprises section of the Michigan Bar, and serves as a mentor and teacher with various Michigan entrepreneurial and small business organizations. He received his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University and his law degree from the University of Miami, Fl.
