A New Dance Company and a New Collaboration
In February, OU dance professors Thayer Jonutz and Ali Woerner combined their dance companies, soduo and Shifting Sol, for a performance entitled Take Root, based on themes inspired by trees. It was an artistic success, much enjoyed by the audiences who saw it and by its creators. It was so rewarding for Ali and Thayer that they decided to join forces indefinitely, and the contemporary dance landscape of Michigan is now graced by a new company, which they have named after their first endeavor: Take Root.
In additional to Ali and Thayer, the dancers in the company are Meg Paul, Vivian Costello, Andrew Dettloff, Liz Schmidt and Madeline Metzger. Alexandra Plaskey is the company manager. Ali says that OU professor of English Kathleen Pfeiffer was in the audience for their February performance in Varner, and her attendance has been providential.

April News
If it's spring, it must be MaTilDa Award time and we want to invite you to join us at our special awards dinner on Monday, April 15 at the Royal Park Hotel in Rochester. There will be a cash bar at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m. The high point of the evening will be performances by some of our students and the presentation of the awards. This event is not just for the family and friends of the award winners. It is open to all and is the perfect excuse to get out some party clothes and have a good time. If you are an alumnus, why not contact a few old friends and use it as an unofficial reunion? Ticket information is available here.
Last month we promised you the names of this year's student winners and here they are: Outstanding Students in Chamber Music, Mark Chandler, Curtis Godzisz, Kyle Marker, Lauren Wilson; Outstanding Student in Music Education, Bridget Dennis; Distinguished Musicianship, Erik Dewar; Outstanding Student in Jazz, Matthew Dufresne.

Debra Bernstein-Siegel: A Life in Dance
Last month, more than 400 college dancers gathered at OU for the East-Central American College Dance Festival Conference. It was the 40th anniversary conference and, to the best of our knowledge, only one of this year's attendees was able to claim that she was also there at the very first one.
That dancer was our very own Debi Bernstein-Siegel, who is retiring this semester after almost twenty years of service to the OU dance program. It's so long, Debi says, that she would have to check her records to be sure just how many years it is. She first began to teach at OU when Carol Halsted, who is now director of dance at Michigan Opera Theatre, was chair of the department. Carol needed someone to teach some of her dance classes and asked Debi to do it.
