OU to host March of Dimes charity walk on Sunday, April 28
This spring, the Oakland University community will play its part to support the health of babies by hosting a Metro Detroit March of Dimes charity walk on Sunday, April 28.
As one of the best-known charities in the nation, the March of Dimes advocates and promotes research, education and community service to prevent birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Since 1970, the organization has raised more than $2.6 billion through its efforts and events, such as the March for Babies walk.
The fun-filled, family event will offer children’s activities, Star Wars characters and novelty mascots, face painters, a bounce house, DJ, and other entertainment. Snacks and beverages will be provided to refuel walkers and volunteers.
“I think it is extremely important for members of the community to come out and participate in such a great event,” said Dennis Richardson, Oakland March for Babies revenue chair.
“As a person who has been involved in fundraising for other charities in the past, I have felt more personal gratification in helping the March of Dimes than I ever have before, because of the direct impact the organization has on mothers and babies through research and programming within our local communities.”
Participants will enjoy a walk route of roughly three miles on Oakland’s scenic campus, which includes 1,443 acres of wooded hills and meadows. Event organizers anticipate more than 2,000 walkers to attend the Oakland walk, along with honorary chair L. Brooks Patterson, and local corporate executives.
The 2013 walk marks the 18th year of the March for Babies event in Oakland County, and the 75th anniversary of the March of Dimes organization.
Departments, organizations and clubs at Oakland are encouraged to participate as teams. Follow the link for more information about registering as a team.
On site registration begins at 9 a.m. and the walk begins at 10 a.m. Walkers or teams can register for the walk at marchforbabies.org.
The walk is sponsored by national and local organizations including Kelly Services, Plante & Moran, Flagstar Bank, UAW-Ford and yp.com, Actavis Inc., Cigna, Famous Footwear, Farmers Insurance, Kmart, Macy’s, Mission Pharmacal, Sanofi Pasteur, and United Airlines.
