By Victoria Lipscomb, media relations intern

Oakland University will host the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge-Detroit 5k and kids one mile run and walk, beginning at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7.

The race is a part of America’s growing premier men’s health event series, the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge, which will take place in 34 cities this year. The race is a benefit to help fund research for prostate cancer.

In its second year, the race will be presented by the Radiology and Radiation Oncology student advocacy group from the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine and urologists from the group of Comprehensive Urology.

Proceeds will be donated to ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer, a research fund similar to the Susan G. Komen fund for breast cancer. Last year the Detroit event brought great success, raising more than $100,000 for ZERO.
A portion of the funds will also be donated to MPURE, a local prostate research fund for Beaumont Health System.

On the day of the race, registration will run from 8-9 a.m. at O’Dowd Hall. For printable and interactive maps of campus, visit oakland.edu/map.

Registration for the 5K Run/Walk is $20 until Saturday, Oct. 6, and $25 on race day. Registration for the one mile kid’s run/walk is $10. All participants will receive a technical shirt.
