Their Technologist Founder, CEO Commercial Leader, and Lead Early Customer/Partner, and MSU's Technology Commercial Collaboration Leader will share their story and answer your questions on landing your first customers/partners and how to leverage university intellectual property.

This MIT EF Savvy Entrepreneur Series panel will help you understand the potential of connecting these dots as an entrepreneur working with university research partnership and lead customer partner. The panel will share how they connected these dots and answer your questions on how to leverage a huge portfolio of research, intellectual property and great base of strategic customers in Michigan.

Universities are recognizing their important role in economic development efforts and find themselves engaged with business more than ever before. Whether through licensing technology, sharing library materials, providing lab space, identifying research teams, or connecting to talent, universities are a tremendous source of resources to a wide-range of businesses and entrepreneurs. To help understand some of the resources and potential assistance that universities can provide, a program will will be presented covering examples of how universities can be engaged and how a small firm can leverage relationships with these institutions.

ABOUT THE SERIES
  • MIT Enterprise Forum, Great Lakes Chapter, GLEQ, UM Dearborn, and the LEAP/The Innovation Center in East Lansing will be hosting live web video interactive sessions to support local networking, statewide networking and sharing of best practices on early stage company magic of integrating a great team, commercialization plan, a lead customer, and university intellectual property to create and awesome sustainable company in Michigan.
  • A high growth business without a lead customer/partner will struggle to gain market traction. Participate in this multi-site interactive workshop to learn simple steps and best practices to help gain market traction for your intellectual property or collaborative university intellectual property. The goal is to share rapid commercialization ideas and introduce potential partners across the sites and leverage panelists experience to support your entrepreneurial journey.

SAVVY MODERATOR HOST AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP SUPPORT LEADER: JEFF SMITH
Jeff Smith serves as Co-Director of the New Economy Division for the Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP). In this role, Jeff establishes and extends programming for Startups, Placemaking and Talent in the Lansing Region. Prior to joining LEAP, Jeff Smith spent the last four years as Project Manager for the New Economy Initiatives for the City of East Lansing, as well as staff of the Lansing Regional Smartzone. In these roles, Jeff helped develop the operations and management programs for the Technology Innovation Center and the Hatch Student Business Incubator.

Prior to working with the City of East Lansing, Jeff spent four years as a Senior Analyst with Anderson Economic Group, conducting real estate market studies and feasibility studies for developers and communities across the state and nation. Jeff is a proud graduate of Michigan State University, earning both a Bachelors in Telecommunications and a Masters Degree in Urban and Regional Planning.
