Elliott Tower receives its top, changing the OU skyline
The weather cooperated as crews lifted the 26-foot steel and titanium topper onto the Elliott Tower on Thursday, May 1, 2014.
In less than a half hour, Oakland University's skyline changed forever. But the logistics on how to successfully lift a 20,000-pound structure 125 feet in the air was a conversation that project manager John Harmala said lasted about two months.
The top section of the Elliott Tower will be home to 49 carillon bells that will be able to play any composition of music and will ring on the quarter of every hour. The bells are expected to arrive next week and will take several days to install.
