Saturday, July 13, 2013 - Business school alums make, strengthen connections at receptions

Oakland University School of Business alums had a chance to connect and learn more about the advances the school is making in educating business students during several happy hour receptions in the Metro Detroit area this spring.

The gatherings, hosted by the business school and Oakland University Alumni Association, were held at Buffalo Wild Wings in Sterling Heights, Troy and Rochester Hills.

Whether they were frequent or first-time alumni event attendees, the alumni who came appreciated the casual atmosphere along with the opportunity to socialize and network.

“The next event, I’ll probably bring more business cards with me,” observes Emily Paula, who graduated in 2012 with a major in human resource development and a concentration in human resource management.

“Within one day, I had 20 new LinkedIn invitations,” adds Paula, an Oxford resident who works in human resources for DaimlerChrysler. “And I got to meet people from OU’s alumni association.”

Reception guests found the special focus on business alums unique.

“I’ve been to all-alumni events,” says Paula “Having a special one for the business school was very helpful. It’s nice to see what people are doing with their business degrees, and it’s beneficial to network with people with similar backgrounds.”

The Rochester reception was Mary Jo Pachla’s first OU alumni event. When she receive the invitation, Pachla, ’80 Management, says “I saw the reception was local, and I thought, I’m a graduate of this university, and it’s time I connect with some of the alumni.”

And Pachla did connect. “There were people my age and younger grads, too. It was refreshing mix.” Now Pachla plans to attend more alumni events, including this August’s OU Night at Comerica Park.

It’s not too late to connect with other Oakland University School of Business alumni via the Linked In group. Alumni with LinkedIn accounts can simply visit the SBA group here and request to join the group. Once approved, group members will be linked to a growing group of SBA alumni interested in sharing information, resources, contacts and more.
