Overview:
In July of 2007, eighteen teachers from Michigan were given the opportunity, through a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency, to take a three-credit hour intensive graduate course (EST643 from Oakland University) about honey bees and their care. The course covered how to be good beekeepers, EPI-PEN certification training, safety procedures, hive observations, and hive management. This grant also provided a hive and honey bees to be installed at their respective schools in Spring 2008, and four student-sized bee suits for each of the eighteen teacher participants. During the 2007-8 academic year, the teacher participants integrated honey bee biology and the knowledge and art of beekeeping into their curriculum.
