Attendance and Academic Progress

ESL Attendance Policy

Students are expected to attend all classes, to arrive on time, and to remain for the entire class period. Students are required to participate (attend) in at least 85% of their ESL classes. Absences are only acceptable in the case of emergencies, and students must notify instructors in advance if an emergency prevents them from attending. A student will FAIL an ESL course if they miss a determined number of classes (see syllabi and/or instructor).
Being on time is also important.  Students who are late for class miss valuable instruction and information.  Students should be aware of the late arrival (tardiness) policy listed on each ESL course syllabus and how this policy relates to total class absences.

Students who do not observe the attendance policy are subject to probation and/or dismissal.

Academic Progress

Academic progress in all classes is expected. For each class, academic progress includes an overall grade of 2.0 in all work, attention and participation in class, and completion of all tests and homework assignments on time.  Students who do not show academic progress are subject to probation and/or dismissal.   IMPORTANT:  Beginning Fall 2014, students will need to earn a 2.5 GPA or above to pass all ESL courses.

For further information about policies and penalties, students should consult the syllabuses for their classes and also the sections on Academic Policies in the Undergraduate Catalogue.
