New VP for Finance and Administration John Beaghan joined OU as the new vice president for Finance and Administration and treasurer to the Board of Trustees on April 12. In his position, he also will serve as chief financial officer to the Oakland University Foundation and oversee the university’s day-to-day financial operations, human resources, police, purchasing and risk management, business services, and the Golf and Learning Center. OU, OCC partner for nursing program A new agreement between Oakland University’s School of Nursing and Oakland Community College (OCC) promises to make higher education more accessible to local students. New Dean for School of Business Administration Jonathan Silberman has been named dean of the School of Business Administration (SBA) and will assume his new position on July 1. Silberman comes to OU from Arizona State University (ASU), West Campus in Phoenix, where he is professor of economics and was the founding dean of ASU-West’s School of Global Leadership and Management. Work under way at Meadow Brook Hall Last June, the Matilda R. Wilson Fund donated an unprecedented $7 million for critical repairs and restorations at Meadow Brook Hall. Planning and analysis began almost immediately to determine which areas of the house needed attention first. Three priorities were identified as needing immediate attention: portions of the roof, including the gutter system, which was leaking in places and already had damaged portions of the hall’s interior; the aging heating system; and the basement refrigeration unit. School partners with WSU on new pharmacy program Experts are predicting a shortfall of pharmacists that could reach more than 150,000 by the year 2010. The School of Health Sciences is responding to this health care challenge with an innovative new partnership with Wayne State University (WSU). Starting this fall, OU pharmacy students can enroll in the new pre-pharmacy program and begin earning a bachelor’s degree in health sciences while preparing for the transition into the PharmD program at WSU’s nationally accredited Doctorate of Pharmacy program. Exhibit promotes peace and understanding "Hello, Dear Enemy! Books on Tolerance and Peace," a traveling exhibit featuring 55 book titles and picture posters from 19 countries, found a home at OU’s Carlotta and Dennis Pawley Hall during this past fall and winter semesters. The exhibit’s primary goal is to promote world peace and understanding between nations and cultures. It was on loan from the National Youth Library in Munich, Germany, and is touring throughout Europe, Asia and North America. Read More |
Coretta Scott King keynotes at scholarship banquet Coretta Scott King highlighted her husband’s achievements in her keynote address at the 2005 Keeper of the Dream Awards Banquet on Feb. 17 at Oakland University. The event honors the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and recognizes award recipients. Frank Giblin named Eye Institute director Frank Giblin recently was named director of the Oakland University Eye Research Institute after serving as the interim director since 2002. A member of the ERI research team since 1974, Giblin has obtained research grants and awards in excess of $6.4 million from institutions that include the National Eye Institute, Alcon Laboratories Inc., the American Health Assistance Foundation, Shojin Research Associates and Oakland University.
