Generally, freshmen admission to Oakland University is based on a combination of criteria: 
  • Cumulative high school grade point averages of 3.2 or above. Applicants with cumulative grade point averages below 3.2, but above 2.5, may be admitted after consideration of the quality of academic preparation. Grade point average is taken from the transcript at the time of application.
  • ACT scores are required. SAT scores will be accepted but converted to ACT scores for admissions evaluation. Oakland University looks for an 18 or higher on the ACT (not including the writing section) or an 860 or higher on the SAT (Critical Reading or Verbal and Math only).
  • Number and types of college preparatory courses
  • Positive trend of grades
First-year college students interested in applying to Oakland University's Honors College should check oakland.edu/hc for additional admissions criteria. 

We strongly encourage students to follow a college preparatory curriculum that includes:
  • Four years of English
  • A minimum of three years of mathematics, including intermediate algebra
  • A minimum of three years in social sciences
  • A minimum of three years in biological/physical sciences
  • A minimum of two years in a foreign language

When
You can apply to Oakland University at any point in the year. But to be eligible for scholarships, be sure to apply and submit all required materials by March 31, 2013 for fall 2013 entry.

How
One thing you'll notice about Oakland University is that there are no fees — no application fee, no fee to use the Recreation Center, not even a graduation fee.

Follow these steps to complete your free admissions application.

  1. Create an Admissions login and record your login and PIN so you can check your application status.
  2. Complete the online application.
  3. Have your official high school transcripts sent to Undergraduate Admissions.
  4. Follow these links to request that your ACT and/or SAT results be sent to Oakland University.
    • ACT — OU’s school code is 2033
    • SAT — OU’s school code is 1497

Check your admissions status
Once your application materials are received, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions will make a decision within 12 weeks. If applying less than four weeks before your intended term of entry, we will prioritize your application and make a decision as soon as possible.

The decision will be to admit, delay or deny. Admissions decisions are sent by email or U.S. mail. If you receive a delay decision, you should contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at (800) OAK-UNIV or (248) 370-3360.

To check your admissions status, return to the online application system and select “Apply for Admission.” Enter the login and PIN you created when you first applied. You may also request a status check by calling the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Advance Placement (AP) Policy
Oakland University rewards students who went above and beyond in high school by granting credit and/or exemptions from certain courses for scores of 3, 4 or 5 on advanced placement examinations.

Some departments require evaluation of the exam booklet to determine how credit or exemptions will be awarded for a specific exam.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Policy
Oakland University values the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and its engaging and challenging curriculum that encourages critical thinking, intercultural understanding and respect. Oakland welcomes applications from IB students, whether you have the IB diploma or certificates in individual IB subjects. Credit will be awarded based on the score received in each higher level IB exam that may count toward a specific course required for graduation, general education requirements, or total credits required for graduation.

College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) Policy
When you take a CLEP exam, you can select the institution that should receive your scores. Select Oakland University (college code: 1497) to have your scores sent here. You also will receive an unofficial copy of your score for your records immediately after the examination (except for College Composition). If you don't indicate where you would like your score sent on the day of the test, you can request a transcript (for a fee).

Oakland University is proud to welcome home-schooled students to its campus. Home-schooled students applying for admission need to supply a transcript and meet regular admissions requirements and have a minimum score of 20 on the ACT. SAT scores are also acceptable. You can use this transcript form for submitting your application. 

Once Oakland University receives your application, we will:

  • Process your application to ensure all materials have been received
  • Determine your grade point average for admission
  • Make a decision regarding your application
  • Share the decision with you via email or U.S. mail

Many home-schooled students also choose to dual-enroll at Oakland University.

GED students applying for admission to Oakland University must be at least 18 years old and have a GED score of 55 or 550, depending on the test scoring system. Have your official GED score sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Now that you have been accepted, you can download and print the step-by-step enrollment guide for freshmen to stay on track during the enrollment process (you should also receive one with your acceptance letter). 

Make sure you're ready for your first semester at Oakland University by going over your New Grizzly checklist. You may have already done some of it during your admissions process, but the checklist will make sure you've covered all your bases.
