E. New Business
1. Motion from the School of Education and Human Services to approve a revised Constitution. (Ms. Bhargava)
MOVED that the Senate recommend to the President and the Board of Trustees approval of the new Constitution of the School of Education and Human Services.
First reading: Debatable but not eligible for final vote at this meeting. Senate protocol holds unit constitutions to be unamendable from the floor. If revisions seem to be needed, the document will be referred back to its authors for reconsideration.
Comment: Here are links to: a) the original SEHS Constitution; b) the revised SEHS Constitution with all changes noted; and finally c) the revised Constitution with the wording and numbering changes indicated but not deleted text.
2. Motion from the Graduate Council to approve a change in policy as regards the temporary 'P' (Progress) grade in thesis, dissertation, and doctoral capstone research projects.
MOVED that the temporary 'P' grade be discontinued for graduate students enrolled in a dissertation, doctoral capstone project or thesis research course, and instead assign real-time, permanent grade as described below:
SP -- satisfactory progress made toward completion of the thesis/dissertation/project
The 'SP' grade is included in credit hours attempted and earned (pass) semester hours, but not calculated into grade point average.
NP - unsatisfactory progress made toward completion of thesis/dissertation/project
The NP grade is included in credit hours attempted, but not included in credit hours earned or calculated into grade point average.
First reading: debatable, amendable, but not eligible for final vote at this meeting.
Rationale: Currently, the temporary 'P' grade counts as attempted credit, but does not count as earned credit until all degree requirements, including defense, are satisfied. Because earned credits are not assigned to the temporary 'P' grade, graduate students exceed the minimum percentage of cumulative attempted/earned credit hours required to meet the standards of academic progress for federal, state and institutional financial aid at Oakland University. For further information see the Graduate Council Commentary.
3. Procedural motion from the Steering Committee to staff a Senate Standing committee. (Ms. Williams)
MOVED that the person listed below be appointed to the following committee:
University Assessment Committee (SECS)
Senkar Sengupta -- Winter 2009 (replacing Keyu Li)
Procedural motion: Debatable, amendable, and eligible for final vote.
