Research at CIBRE

Harnessing the strength of years of collaborative cross-disciplinary applied research projects, the CIBRE creates a laser focus on research that solves today’s business problems while helping businesses prepare for tomorrow’s challenges. Building on existing partnerships and past cross-disciplinary projects that link information technology, human resource management, business strategy and health care management, CIBRE applied research projects create results – regionally and globally. Connecting Oakland University’s School of Business with other units on campus and institutions across the nation and world to pursue joint research, CIBRE existing partnerships include:
  • Strategy and Architecture Research Group: Through a partnership with the former strategy group called Enterprise Architecture Interest group (EAIG), the CIBRE at SBA is supporting the integration of global business strategy in internal IT competencies (people, processes, technology).
  • Health Care Management Research: Building on eight years of experience with executive health care management experience and outstanding research in health care economics, CIBRE partners with OU’s Schools of Health Science, Nursing, and the new Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine to address several key areas in health care management research. These include preventive care, patient care through sharing of patient information and best practice knowledge, and distributed and on-demand patient care.
  • Global Business Research:  Leveraging our partnership with over 40 institutions in 17 countries, CIBRE will channel SBA research in areas such as information technology, international marketing and branding, strategy, governance and reporting system integration, virtual team work, etc. Partnership with OU’s College of Arts and Sciences and School of Education and Human Services, CIRBE is exploring the role on global culture and virtual communication on team work, learning and knowledge sharing.
  • Research in Law: Leveraging our partnership with Cooley Law School, CIBRE will explore issues such as contract and intellectual property laws, tax and financial reporting, and entrepreneurship.
  • Service Science: Systems, Engineering and Management: As part of a Korean government project called World-Class University (WCU), Sogang University (SU) won a $10 million grant to complete a proposal titled “Service Systems Engineering for the Creation of New Growth Engine based on Knowledge Service” in April 2009. SBA MIS Professor Vijayan Sugumaran is part of the team that will be working on this research and CIBRE is partnering with several other universities in this area as well such as Indiana University at Bloomington, University of Arizona, Penn State University, University of WI-Milwaukee, San Jose State University among others.
  • Automotive Futures:  Recognizing that the future automotive industry has to be service driven and lifecycle focused, CIBRE has partnered with IMVP in hosting an automotive futures conference in June and held a round table discussion with CAR, IMVP, University of Windsor automotive research group. OESA and dealer group representatives as well as Penske and Ford in August 2009.  These discussions and several CIBRE Conversations held in summer 2009 related to the manufacturing challenges in the tool/die industry has lead CIBRE to develop a proposal for a center of excellence in automotive research at Oakland University. This will be used for future funding.
  • Other research initiatives include:

    * Michigan patent analysis and the role of economic policies in bridging the gap between patent generation and business venture formation (see entrepreneurship),

    * Improve intra- and inter-organizational processes in support of not only reducing waste and streamline work-flows, but also reduce energy costs and carbon footprint (see clean energy application and management), and

    * Improve the role of agent technologies and semantic modeling in support of virtual collaboration across networks and study the role of virtual communities in support of knowledge sharing.
