Ushering in a new phase of growth and renewal, 2009 brought with it affirmation that Oakland University is delivering a quality educational experience through unique programs and dedication to excellence. Oakland’s constantly evolving list of degree programs has brought a new level of prominence to the school as a nationally recognized institution of higher learning.
Oakland welcomed its largest class of freshman yet this fall, bringing the total enrollment up to 18,920 students. This figure represents a 28.5 percent increase in enrollment from 10 years ago and a 4 percent increase over last year.
In 2009, Oakland University was granted unqualified accreditation for the next 10 years by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Division. This recognition represents a tremendous effort on the part of university administrators, staff, faculty and students.
The Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine drew ever-nearer to completion, with the announcement of six associate deans. The school will accept its inaugural class of students in fall 2011, bringing a plethora of new jobs to the surrounding community and raising the overall prestige of the university.
Individual programs also received national accreditation in 2009, including the dance program and Wellness, Health Promotion and Injury Prevention. A new bachelor’s degree in Cinema Studies was added and the School of Business Administration celebrated its 40th anniversary.
In order to help combat Michigan’s economic woes, Oakland University worked to remain one of the most affordable institutions in the state by implementing a no-fees tuition policy and creating programs such as the Summer Student Campus Corps to help place students in internship-style summer jobs on campus.
Oakland University’s first-ever capital campaign reached a successful conclusion by achieving its $110 million goal a full year early, raising a total of $111,843,187.93. These funds will touch virtually every part of campus by creating new scholarships, establishing research endowment funds and making new professorships and faculty chairs available, as well as improving and updating classroom, laboratory and building space on campus and completing the naming of Pawley and Elliott Halls.
The story of Oakland University continues below in news stories highlighting its many diverse and innovative programs, events and accomplishments. The articles demonstrate Oakland’s growing reputation of providing a distinctive educational experience.
