B. Roll Call
Approval of the minutes of the April 10, 2003 meeting.
C. Old Business.
1. Motion from the Steering Committee to change the chairmanship of the Academic Conduct Committee. (Mr. Coppin; Ms. Schott-Baer)
MOVED that the Academic Conduct Committee have one chair instead of two co-chairs.
Second reading: Debatable, amendable and eligible for final vote at this meeting.
Comment: The original purpose in having two co-chairs was to enable each to head separate hearing panels. However the hearing panels are scheduled to accommodate a range of schedule modules. In nominating the co-chairs the Steering Committee would not know their teaching schedules for the following year. The Steering Committee proposes to nominate a single chair and allow the committee to work out for itself who will lead the hearing panels.
Historical note from the Agenda of 9/22/94 explaining the decision to appoint co-chairs:
Academic Conduct Committee: Second, the appointment of co-chairs is intended to allow the burden of this office to be shared. Current language is silent on the designation of the chair, and history and custom have led to its falling upon one individual. With the increasing number and complexity of cases in recent years, this role has become additionally demanding. The midyear resignation of the 1993/94 chair illustrates the unhappy consequences of placing the entire burden on one person. It is envisioned that the two co-chairs will divide the work of the year between them in an equitable and mutually agreeable fashion. This language will formalize an arrangement that the Steering Committee has made for the upcoming year when Prof. Fish and Prof. Latcha will share the office. Members of the Academic Conduct Committee hope that these modest reforms will enable it to better fulfill its important mission. Senate Agenda 9/22/94)
D. New Business
1. Election of Senate Steering Committee (Senate Elections Committee-Mr. Khapoya, chair)
As this is the first meeting of a new Senate, the Constitution calls for election of six senators to the Senate Steering Committee for terms of two years. The only limitation on electability of senators to this Committee is that no more than two may be elected from any one organized faculty. The Steering Committee normally meets twice a month (Tuesday afternoons) to set the Senate agenda, refer business to Senate committees and receive reports from those bodies and advise the Senate on governance issues; it also meets occasionally during the spring and summer. If you wish to nominate someone, please establish in advance that the person is willing to serve. For a list of Senate members see the list of current senators.
