Accessible Housing Services
|
The Office of University Housing & DSS work together to provide accessible housing on a case by case basis. Students must indicate their needs on the Student Profile Information Sheet and submit it with their hall/residence application to the Housing Office. Students must also register with the DSS office to request a housing accommodation.

Academic Advising
|
DSS is available to discuss program accommodations with academic advisors and to provide guidance to students on fully utilizing the academic services available. It may be appropriate for you to discuss your functional limitations with your advisor to assist with course planning.

Alternative Formats
|
DSS will convert printed information onto CD in order to make it accessible to students. Also, handouts and overheads can be enlarged or reproduced in Braille.
|
|
Alternative Furniture
|
Alternative furniture may be provided to students for whom the standard desks and chairs in the classroom are inaccessible due to physical disability. Examples of alternative furniture include padded seating, armless chairs, and stand-alone accessible tables.

|
Alternative Testing
|
Students may be approved for either extended testing time or individualized testing arrangements. The appropriate method is discussed and agreed upon by the student and the Director during the initial meeting.

Auxiliary Aids
|
DSS has a variety of auxiliary aids available to students who are registered with our office.
- Communication via phone with a person who is deaf (TTY)
- Language Master (a multi-faceted language tool)
- ear plugs
- Orbit/Mouse
- Clickers for opening doors

|
Classroom Changes
|
DSS and the registrar coordinate classroom changes each semester to accommodate students registered for courses located in classrooms that are inaccessible. Notify DSS early with requests for changes.

Door Openers
|
Door openers are available for most university buildings.
|
|
Library Services
|
Kresge librarians provide private consultations designed for students with disabilities by appointment. The reference or circulation staff is available to retrieve materials and books. To use a computer with assistive technology, sign out a key at the circulation desk.

Note-takers
|
Note-taker services will be provided to students with disabilities based on verification of disability and documented need.
|
|
Priority Registration
|
Priority registration allows students with disabilities the option of enrolling early for university courses. There is a "window" of time occurring one week before regular registration begins each semester that is designated as priority registration for DSS students. The exact dates of priority registration are posted in the DSS office, newsletter and a broadcast email notifies DSS students. Priority registration ends when regular registration begins for all students.

Psycho-educational Testing
|
The Graham Health and Counseling Center provides testing and assessment that documents the existence of a disability. Make an appointment and payment schedule for services by calling 248-370-3465.

Recreation Center
|
The Campus Recreation Center has a variety of exercise equipment specifically designed for people with disabilities who are interested in fitness.
|
|
Scanned Textbooks
|
DSS works with textbook publishers and the university print shop to make textbooks accessible. Documents are scanned and downloaded to CDs to be used with screen readers for students with print disabilities.

Snow Priority Route
|
The Campus Accessibility Map displays the pathway that will be cleared as a priority during snow fall. Students using wheel chairs can submit individual routes at the semester start to have pathways cleared during snowy weather. Report any problem areas to the DSS office or on Report a Barrier Form on our web-site.

S.T.U.D.
|
Students Toward Understanding Disabilities: STUD was formed by students to create awareness and educate the campus community about disability issues and to actively contribute to student life at OU.
