1. Motion from the Academic Standing and Honors Committee concerning undergraduate readmission to the university. (Ms. Sieloff)
MOVED that the Senate recommend the adoption of the following policy concerning undergraduate readmission to the university:
Readmission to the university is not automatic for students dismissed because of a poor academic record. The number of times a student will be readmitted is limited. An application for a first readmission by a student who has been dismissed for insufficient academic progress is reviewed by the university's Readmission's Committee. Decisions about readmission are made on a case by case basis involving review of the student's file.
A student dismissed for academic performance who is readmitted but fails to academically progress, resulting in a second academic dismissal, may not apply for readmission to the university for a period of three years. The Academic Standing and Honors Committee will review the Academic records of students applying for readmission a second time. If a student is dismissed for academic reasons a third time, the student may not be readmitted to Oakland University.
First reading: Debatable, amendable but not eligible for final vote.
Comment. This proposed addition to the current readmissions policy is recommended by the Academic Standing and Honors Committee. If approved, the paragraphs above would be added to the section on Readmission which can be found on page 59 of the 1999-2000 OU Undergraduate Catalog. In the past few years this Committee has reviewed a number of cases of readmission in which it seemed that the university might better serve a given student by clearly defining a policy. The Committee hopes this amendment will spare some students from a fruitless cycle of dismissal, appeal and readmission.
