Note: Ms. Cronn will be in Miami at the American Council on Education-sponsored annual conference on diversity, called One Third of a Nation, with a team of four OU representative and thus will be unable to attend this meeting. She has asked Mr. Andrews of the Steering Committee to serve as chair in her absence.

I. Approval of the minutes of the September 18, 1997 meeting.

1. Procedural motion from the Steering Committee to staff Senate standing committees. (Mr. Dillon)

MOVED that the persons listed below be elected to the Senate standing committees for the terms specified:

Senate Athletics Committee
Michael Long (School of Education and Human Services) 1997-98
Michelle Piskulich (Political Science Dept.) 1997-99

Senate Library Committee
Mo Zohdy (School of Engineering and Computer Science) 1997-2000

University Committee on Assessment
Kristine Condic (Library) 1997-2000

Procedural motion: Debatable, amendable and eligible for final vote.

2. Procedural motion from the Steering Committee to elect faculty representatives to the University’s Police Oversight Committee (Ms. Reynolds )

MOVED that the following persons be elected to serve as faculty representatives on the university’s Police Oversight Committee for the terms specified:

Jay Meehan (Sociology Dept) 1997-2000
William Keane (School of Education and Human Services) 1997-2000

Procedural motion: Debatable, amendable and eligible for final vote.

Comment: The University is required by Michigan law to establish a Police Oversight Committee staffed by elected representatives of the university community. The Committee’s function is to investigate any charges of inappropriate police behavior.
