1. Election of Senate Steering Committee (Senate Elections Committee)

As this is the first meeting of a new Senate, the Constitution calls for election of six senators to the Senate Steering Committee for terms of two years in the case of faculty members or administrative staff and one year in the case of students. The only limitation on electability of senators to this Committee is that no more than two may be elected from any one organized faculty. The Steering Committee normally meets twice a month (Tuesday afternoons from 1-3) to set the Senate agenda, refer business to Senate committees and receive reports from those bodies and advise the Vice President for Academic Affairs (its chair) on governance issues; it also meets occasionally during the spring and summer. If you wish to nominate someone, please establish in advance that the person is willing to serve. A list of current senators accompanies this agenda.

2. Procedural motion from the Steering Committee to staff Senate standing committees. (Mr. Brieger)

MOVED that the persons listed below be elected to the Senate standing committees for the terms specified:

Academic Conduct Committee
Carol Zenas (School of Nursing)--1997-99

General Education Committee
Nathan Longon (Dept. of Modern Languages)--1997-99
Sara Newton (School of Nursing)--1997-98 (replacement for Margaret Christensen)

Senate Budget Review Committe
Duane Moore (School of Education and Human Services)--1997-2000 (replacement for Fay Hansen-Smith)

University Committee on Undergraduate Instruction
Gene Fliedner (School of Business Administration)--1997-98 ( replacement for Floyd Willoughby)

3.  Motion from the Steering Committee to revise membership and term of appointment on the University Assessment Committee.  (Ms. Reynolds)

MOVED that the membership of the University Assessment Committee be revised to include a representative from the Library Faculty and that the term of  service be changed to three years.

First reading: Debatable, amendable but not eligible for final vote.

Comment: The Assessment Committee has requested these changes. The addition of a Library Faculty representative will assist the committee in looking at information literacy concerns; the change to a three year term rather than two years is requested because of the steep learning curve and the need for experienced committee members.
The membership would then consist of :   Three faculty members from the College and one from each School and the Library, appointed to staggered three [two] year terms by the Senate upon nomination from the Steering Committee which shall designate one of these as chair; one student designated by the University Student Congress, the Vice President for Academic Affairs (or designee) and one Oakland University alumnus(a) designated by the Alumni Board on nomination of the Director of Alumni Relations.

4.  Motion from the Steering Committee to revise membeship on the Senate Athletics Committee (Mr. Andrews)

MOVED that the membership of the Senate Athletics Committee be revised to include four faculty and two students.

First reading: Debatable, amendable but not eligible for final vote.

Comment:  At the April 1997 Senate meeting when the Senate Athletics Committee was created, the Steering Committee indicated that it had recommended the above membership specifications to the President and Board. This recommendation has now been accepted and hence the above motion is offered to put the recommendation into effect. The membership of the Athletic Committee would then be: Four faculty, two students, one staff member, one external community member, serving three year terms; the Faculty Athletics Representative who shall serve as chair; and the Athletics Director, ex officio.

5. Other

Note: The Steering Committee still has some vacancies to fill on Senate Committees.   These committees are: Academic Conduct Committee, Academic Standing and Honors Committee, Senate Athletics Committee (assuming the previous motion is approved).   And it is likely that other vacancies will occur during the year.  If you or any of your colleagues would like to volunteer,  please notify the Provost or the Senate's secretatry of your willingness to serve.
