1.  Procedural motion from the Steering Committee to approve Human Relations Committee appointments  (Ms. Reynolds)

MOVED that the following persons be confirmed as appointed to the Human Relations Committee.

Nathan Longan (Modern Languages)
Cassandra Bailey-Ealy (Office of Equity)

Procedural motion: Debatable, amendable and eligible for final vote at this meeting.

Comment: The legislation establishing the Human Relations Committee specifies that all members, including appointees, be approved by the Senate. The individuals listed above are the Vice President for Academic Affairs appointed representatives.

2.  Procedural motion from the Steering Committee to elect faculty members to the University's Police Oversight Committee (Mr. Dillon)

MOVED that the following persons be elected to serve as faculty representatives on the university's Police Oversight Committee for the terms as specified:

      Floyd Willoughby (1995-1997)
      Jay Meehan (1995-1997)

Procedural Motion: Debatable, amendable and eligible for final vote at this meeting.

Comment: The first Police Oversight Committee was formed in Dec. 1992 and members terms have expired. The university is required by Michigan law to establish a Police Oversight Committee staffed by elected representatives of the University community. The committee's function is to investigate any charges of inappropriate police behavior.

3.  Motion from the Steering Committee to update Committee membership specifications (Mr. Andrews)

MOVED that the Senate approve the following changes in Senate Committee memberships:
replace "Director of Advising" with "Director of Academic Services and General Studies" on the Academic and Career Advising Committee and the University Committee on Undergraduate Instruction.

Membership would then be:

Academic and Career Advising Committee: Five faculty, four students, two administrative professionals; and the Vice President for Student Affairs (or designee), the Director of Academic services and General Studies and the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, all three ex-officio and non- voting.

University Committee on Undergraduate Instruction: one faculty member from each organized faculty, appointed to staggered three year terms by the Senate upon nomination by the Steering Committee, each of whom shall represent UCUI to the Committee on Instruction or equivalent group in her/his academic unit and one of whom shall be chair; the Director of Academic Services and General Studies; two undergraduate students designated by the University Student Congress, the above to be voting members. In addition the following shall serve ex-officio and non- voting; the Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs; the Vice President for Student Affairs (or designee); and the Registrar (or designee)

First reading: Debatable, amendable, but not eligible for final vote at this meeting.

Comment: This is a housekeeping detail to update the membership specifications. The motion reflects a change from several years back wherein the position Director of Advising was changed to that of the Director of Academic Services and General Studies.
