First Meeting
Thursday, 21 September 1995
3:10 p.m.
East Crockery--Oakland Center
AGENDA
Respectfully submitted by Gary D. Russi for the Steering Committee.
A. Information items.
1. Welcome and updates
-Appointment of Senate Secretary and Parliamentarian
B. New Business.
I. Election of Senate Steering Committee. (Senate Elections Committee)
As this is the first meeting of a new Senate, the Constitution calls for election of six senators to the Senate Steering Committee for terms of two years in the case of faculty members or administrative staff and one year in the case of students. The only limitation on electability of senators to this Committee is that no more than two may be elected from any one organized faculty. The Steering Committee normally meets twice a month Tuesday afternoons from 1-3 to set the Senate agenda, refer business to Senate committees and receive reports from those bodies and advise the Vice President for Academic Affairs (its chair) on governance issues; it also meets occasionally during the spring and summer. If you wish to nominate someone, please establish in advance that the person is willing to serve. A list of current senators accompanies this agenda.
II. Procedural motion from the Steering Committee to staff Senate standing committees (Ms.Benson)
MOVED that the persons listed below be confirmed as nominated to Senate standing committees for the terms specified:
a. ACADEMIC CONDUCT COMMITTEE
Estela Moreno-Mazzoli (Modern Languages)(1995 - 96)
Mildred Merz (Library) (Fall, 1995)
b. ACADEMIC STANDING AND HONORS COMMITTEE
Mark Severson (Chemistry) (1995-97)
c. ADMISSIONS AND FINANCIAL AID COMMITTEE
Charles Lindemann (Biology) as Chair (1995-96)
d. COMMITTEE ON HUMAN RELATIONS

Appointed members:
Rebecca Wickham
Robert Fink
e. RESEARCH COMMITTEE
Ranald Hansen (1995-97)
f. SENATE BUDGET REVIEW COMMITTEE
Keith Kleckner (1995-98)
g. UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE ON UNDERGRADUATE INSTRUCTION
School of Engineering and Computer Science
Fatma Mili (1995-97)
James Ozinga as Chair (1995-96)
Procedural Motion: Debatable, amendable and eligible for final vote at this meeting.
Comment: This motion completes the process of staffing Senate Committees for the immediate future. The names listed above, drawn principally from volunteer lists, reflect the Steering Committee's current expectations about committee membership. Veteran senators will not be surprised to find corollary motions on subsequent agendas to replace members who will be on leave. Faculty who wish to volunteer for Senate standing committees may still make their wishes known to the Steering Committee and will be considered as vacancies arise.
3. Motion from Academic Standing and Honors Committee (Mr.Christina)
MOVED that the following changes recommended by the Academic Standing and Honors Committee be approved, thereby changing the probation and dismissal policy of the University. Proposed changes are underlined:
The following Academic Probation and Dismissal Policy applies to all undergraduate and second degree students.
1. Students with a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or above or without an established cumulative GPA are considered to be in good academic standing.
2. Students in good academic standing will be placed on probation at the end of a semester/session when their cumulative GPA is below 2.00. They will be allowed to remain at Oakland University on probationary status for at least one semester/session.
3. At the end of a probationary semester/session, students will be:
a. returned to good academic standing if their cumulative GPA is 2.00 or higher,
b. dismissed from the university if the following three criteria occur simultaneously:
1) if their cumulative GPA is below the minimum required GPA based on the total number of Oakland University and transfer credits earned (see table below), and they have attempted a minimum of 24 credits at Oakland university, and
3) their semester GPA for the term just completed is below 2.00, or
c. continued on probation if a. and b. do not apply.
Comment: This change will allow part time students the same opportunity as full time students. Presently if a student attempts 4 credits in each of 2 consecutive semesters and does not maintain a 2.0 grade point he/she is subject to dismissal. This disadvantages part time students because they can be dismissed on the basis as few as 8 credits. A student could earn a 0.0 in one semester and a 3.5 in the second and still be dismissed. This revised policy would allow the student to attempt 24 credits (a normal 2 semester load for a full time student) before being dismissed from the university. C. Good and welfare.
