A. Old Business
Neither the Senate Planning Review Committee, which introduced the motion on consolidation of Oakland University's Schools of Nursing and Health Sciences at the 23 September meeting, nor the senators who engaged in spirited discussion at that meeting believe that the motion is ready for a second reading at this time. The Steering Committee will place the motion on a later agenda--attempting to reach the expeditious decision needed by Nursing faculty as they prepare their accreditation self-study while allowing the SPRC sufficient time to formulate the recommendation it has promised on the basis of research now underway by that body and its sister committees, the Senate Budget Review Committee and the University Committee on Undergraduate Instruction. The SPRC "Preliminary Report" of September 20, 1993 (already distributed to senators) identifies the central questions to which Mr. Chipman's group seeks answers. While awaiting the committee's recommendation, senators should inform themselves by careful reading of documents the SPRC has made available; this includes statements delivered at the Open Hearing of September 16 and background materials establishing historical context. As these materials are too voluminous for general distribution, copies have been placed in deans' offices, the Academic Affairs office, and the Kresge Library reserve desk for community members to study. Hence, there is no Old Business immediately confronting the Senate.
B. New Business
1. Procedural motion from the Steering Committee to fill vacancies on Senate standing committees (Mr. Grossman)
MOVED that the following persons be confirmed as nominated to Senate standing committees for the terms specified:
Senate Assessment Committee
Bhushan Bhatt, Associate Dean, to represent the School of Engineering and Computer Science (1993-95)
University Committee on Undergraduate Instruction
(person to be designated) to represent the School of Engineering and Computer Science (1993-95)
Procedural motion: Debatable, amendable, and eligible for final vote at this meeting.
Comment: This motion completes the process of staffing Senate committees for the immediate future by filling SECS slots on the two committees whose membership specifications call for representation from each organized faculty. The School is in the process of conducting committee elections as this Agenda goes to press. The new chair of its Curriculum Committee will serve on UCUI.

Comment: In order to inform senators about the contributions of Senate committees, which quietly carry out much of the work for which this body is responsible, the Steering Committee has invited outgoing and incoming chairs of these bodies to make brief oral presentations to the Senate at the beginning of the academic year. This also provides an opportunity for senators to recommend agenda items these groups might appropriately address as they continue their service. Other committee chairs will report in October.
