OAKLAND UNIVERSITY SENATE

Seventh Meeting
Thursday, 12 March 1992
3:10 p.m.
Oakland Room, Oakland Center

AGENDA

Respectfully submitted by Keith R. Kleckner for the Steering Committee

A.  Old Business

1.   Motion from the Academic and Career Advising Committee (Ms. Mabee; Mr. Hough).
Item B. 1. from the agenda of 13 February 1992.

MOVED that the Senate accept the committee's "Statement on the Academic Advising System at Oakland University."

Second Reading: Debatable, amendable, and eligible for final vote at this meeting.

B.  New Business

1.  Motion from the University Committee on Undergraduate Instruction to establish a graduation requirement in American cultural diversity (Mr. Appleton).

MOVED that all Oakland University students must acquaint themselves with American cultural diversity by taking at least one course designated as exploring the implications of the disciplines for ethnic perspectives and interrelationships. Courses will acquire this designation through departmental application to a subcommittee of UCUI, demonstrating that at least the equivalent of three weeks of the course deal with these subjects. These courses may be in any rubric and may also be used to meet general education, major, minor, distribution, concentration, elective credit or other degree requirements. This requirement is to be implemented when UCUI has approved a sufficient number of courses to meet student nee .

Comment: This motion responds to concerns nationally, in Michigan, and at Oakland University about the need for undergraduate students to gain at least some elementary acquaintance with the perspectives of American Ethnic groups other than their own, and with the nature of the interrelationships among these groups both historically and contemporaneously. It has been reviewed by the General Education Committee and Committee on Human Relations, which will report their recommendations to the Senate.

First Reading: Debatable, amendable, but not eligible for final vote at this meeting.

2.  Motion from the Graduate Council to change designations for some degrees (Mr. Dahlgren).

MOVED that the following graduate degrees offered by the School of Education and Human Services be designated as M. Ed. rather than M.A.T.: Curriculum, Instruction, and Leadership; Early Childhood; and Special Education.

Comment: This proposal emanates from SEHS departments, which regard the M. Ed. as a more accurate representation of their programs than the M.A.T.. The change does not affect M.A.T. degrees in Reading.

First Reading: Debatable, amendable, but not eligible for final vote at this meeting.

3.  Motion from the Steering Committee to establish a Senate Committee on University Budget and Finance (to be circulated in advance of the meeting by Mr. Hough).
