Motion from the Admissions and Financial Aid Committee to modify the Oakland University Undergraduate Admissions Policy for certain transfer students (Mr. Hovanesian):
MOVED that the Senate recommend to the President and the Board that Section IV of the Undergraduate Admissions Policy adopted in 1985 be modified to implement permanently the modifications introduced for a trial period at the April 20, 1989 meeting of the University Senate.
First reading: Debatable, amendable, but not eligible for final vote at this meeting .
Comment: At its meeting of April 20, 1989, the Senate responded in two ways to concerns about unfortunate effects of its 1985 Undergraduate Admissions Policy on certain categories of transfer students:
1) By reducing from 40 to 24 credits the minimum number of transfer credits that must be taken at another institution in order for the admission decision to be made independent of the applicant's high school record, and
2) By clarifying the evidence that would be used to project probabilities of collegiate success for those applicants who had completed 24 or more semester hours of transferable credit with a 2.0 to 2.49 GPA.
This modification was adopted on a trial basis with instructions to Admissions and Financial Aid to study the matter of transfer admission standards and make a recommendation to the Senate. That Committee now professes itself satisfied that, for most students, one year of full-time study at another institution with evidence of good performance in meaningful classes should be a reasonable predictor of success at Oakland University; for others with weaker records, however, the Admissions Office should maintain flexibility in evaluating evidence. It recommends that the Senate adopt this modification on a permanent basis and communicate policy clearly to academic advisers at other institutions. A statement of the Committee's reasoning, along with specific language for the revised policy statement accompanies this agenda (for Senators only).
