Oakland University Senate

Third Meeting
Thursday, 8 November 1990
3:10 p.m.
Oakland Room, Oakland Center

AGENDA

Respectfully submitted by Keith R. Kleckner for the Steering Committee

A.  Old Business:

1.   Motion from the School of Nursing to approve a new graduate program in Nurse Anesthesia (Ms. Cass; Mr. Pettengill). Item B.I. from the agenda of 18 October 1990.

MOVED that the Senate recommend to the President and the Board approval of a new track in the Master of Science in Nursing program, a specialization in Nurse Anesthesia to be offered in partnership with the William Beaumont Hospital.

Second Reading:  Debatable, amendable, and eligible for final vote at this meeting.

B.  New Business:

1.  Motion from the University Committee on Undergraduate Instruction to modify policy with regard to evaluation of advanced placement examinations (Mr. Appleton):

MOVED that credit toward graduation will be granted to students who present evidence of satisfactory completion in high school of examinations offered by the Advanced Placement Program of the College Entrance Examination Board. Credits and appropriate course or other exemptions will be granted for grades of "3", "4", or "5" in these examinations, except that individual academic departments may deny credit to those earning scores of 11311 by filing a clear and comprehensive statement of the policy they propose to follow -- and a rationale for this policy -- with the Office of the Registrar and the University Committee on Undergraduate Instruction.

First Reading: Debatable, amendable, but not eligible for final vote at this meeting.

Comment: At the request of the Registrar's Office, UCUI undertook reconsideration of current practice, which leaves to individual departments discretion about assigning credit and/or course exemptions on the basis of Advanced Placement examinations. Reasons for introducing the proposed policy include reduction in often needless  paperwork, encouragement of applications from students enrolled in Advanced Placement high school programs (many of whom now regard Oakland University as unduly restrictive by contrast with other Michigan institutions), and achievement of a reasonable but not absolute degree of consistency in the way various subject examinations get credited. Supplementary information on Oakland University practices in recent years and the practices of other universities accompanies this agenda (for Senators only).* A statement of current Oakland University policy may be found on page 12 of the 1990-91 Undergraduate Catalog.

C.  Good and Welfare:

        Private Resolutions

D.  Information Items:

1.   Senate role with respect to proposed conference center.

*Exhibit A shows Oakland's recent history of AP examination evaluations. Exhibit B contrasts our practices with those of several other institutions. The key data for the present consideration are the treatments of  "3" scores.
