Oakland University Senate

10:00 a.m.
363 South Foundation Hall (Note Location)
Agenda
Respectfully submitted by Keith R. Kleckner for the Steering Committee.
A. Old Business:
1. Consideration of policies governing professor emeritus(a) status. President Champagne will be present to discuss his views on the matter. Because the Senate last dealt with this item a year ago, there are appended statements of current policy (Exhibit A) and the Senate-recommended substitute (Exhibit B). The principal difference between the two statements lies in the expectations of the number of faculty who will receive the emeritus(a) designation upon retirement. Under current policy the fraction is relatively small. Enaction of the Senate's substitute would increase that fraction to nearly unity. The language of the ad-hoc committee which drafted the Senate-approved language is instructive on this point.
"After lengthy discussions at several meetings, the ad hoc committee recommends a drastic change in University policy in regards of the award of emeritus(a) title and status, to wit:
The title and status of professor emeritus(a) should be awarded to any eligible tenured faculty member upon retirement."
(Eligibility is subsequently defined essentially by length of service as an OU faculty member.
