September 20, 1984 Meeting Agenda

Oakland University Senate

Thursday, 20 September 1984
3:10 p.m.
128, 129, 130 Oakland Center

AGENDA

Respectfully submitted by Keith R. Kleckner for the Steering Committee.

A. Old Business:

None

B. New Business:

1. Steering Committee Election (Mr. Arnold, Elections Committee)

Comment: One Senator is to be elected to serve during 1984-85, replacing Nadia Boulos, who is on leave. Article IV, ix, of the Constitution of the Oakland University Senate as amended and approved 15 February 1984 provides that "no more than two seats shall be held by Senators from any one faculty." In this case, that means that additional Senators from the College of Arts and Sciences are ineligible to serve. Returning members of the Steering Committee are:
Keith R.  Kleckner, ex officio (chair),
David Downing, College of Arts and Sciences
Jane Eberwein, College of Arts and Sciences
Robert Edgerton, School of Engineering and Computer Science
Robbin Hough, School of Economics and Management
Howard Splete, School of Human and Educational Services

2. Motion from the Steering Committee nominating certain faculty members to fill vacancies on Senate standing committees (Mr. Downing):

MOVED that the faculty nominated below be confirmed as appointed to committees and terms as specified:

a. Academic Policy and Planning Committee
Brian Sangeorzan to replace Elizabeth Titus (1984-86)
Lynne Williams to replace Oded Izraeli (1984-85)

b. Academic Standing and Honors Committee
Mary Sherman to replace Richard Rozek (1984-86)

c. General Education Committee
William Fish replace Jean Easterly (1984-86)

d. Teaching and Learning Committee
Harvey Burdick to serve as chair (1984-85)
Margaret Pigott to replace Joan Rosen (1984-85)
William Hoffman to replace William Bryant (fall 1984)
Robert Schwartz to replace Janet Krompart (fall 1984)

Comment: Mesdames Easterly and Titus have departed to assume new challenges outside Oakland University, thereby relinquishing seats on standing committees as well as on the Senate. Mr. Rozek has resigned his position on Academic Standing and Honors in order to serve on the University Committee on Undergraduate Instruction (UCUI). All other changes indicated above result from academic leaves.

C. Good and Welfare?
    Private Resolutions.

D. Information Items:

1. As instructed by the Senate at its 23 April 1984 meeting, the Steering Committee has set staggered terms for members of the new UCUI. Terms of
office are as follows:

Mark Briod (1984-85)
Penny Cass (1984-85)
William Cramer (1984-86)
David Downing (1984-86)
Richard Rozek (1984-86)
David Sidaway (1984-85)
Christian Wagner (1984-86)

2. Minutes of the first Oakland University Senate meeting (January 1960) are attached to this agenda to aid members of this body in celebrating a
quarter-century's progress in governance. Records of two general faculty meetings preceding establishment of the Senate also remain on
file in the Provost's Office.

E. President's Remarks:
President Champagne will discuss recent fiscal trends in Michigan public higher education and their impact on OU.
