Eligibility

Participant Eligibility

PUB is funded to serve students who have demonstrated in secondary school that they have the academic potential to succeed in college.  PUB provides Service Scholarships valued at more than $4,900.00 per participant per year. Being a member of PUB is like having a scholarship because there is no cost to members. Students who wish to join and benefit from the program must meet the following eligibility requirements.
 
  1. Attend one of the following target schools in the ninth or tenth grade: 
    • Pontiac High School
    • Pontiac Academy for Excellence
    • Oak Park High School
  2. Parents/Guardians do not have a bachelors degree OR
  3. Household income falls within federal guidelines
  4. U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
  5. Have a minimum cumulative G.P.A (grade point average) of 2.5 OR demonstrate the ability to do so
  6. Non-proficiency in math or english on the 8th grade MEAP
  7. Be serious about preparing for college
  8. Demonstrate a need for the services that PUB provides:

Partnerships

Students who are members of PUB may also participate in the McCree Scholars, Dual-Enrollment, and GEAR UP Programs. Dual membership in other academic programs will be worked out on an individual basis.

How to Apply

Students who wish to participate in the program should apply early.  Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.  The major annual recruitment period is February-April. A limited number of applications may be considered in September-October.  To apply, please print out and complete the application and essay forms. Send the completed forms with teacher recommendations and parent income information to the Project Advisor at the address listed below. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact the office and speak to the Project Advisor.

The Process

Only completed application packets will be considered. Once the completed application is received, an interview will be scheduled for eligible applicants and their parents. All applicants are notified in writing of the outcome. Students who are offered membership must confirm acceptance by attending orientation with a parent and taking a placement test.
