Oakland University Senate
Second Meeting
Thursday, October 13, 1983
3:10 p.m.
128-130 Oakland Center
AGENDA
Respectfully submitted by Keith R. Kleckner for the Steering Committee.
A. Old Business:
1. Motions regarding the Graduate Council:
a. Constitutional Amendment to revise the provisions under which the Graduate Council is established (Moved, Mr. Feeman; Seconded, Ms. Gerulaitis):
MOVED that Article VI of the Constitution of the Senate be repealed and replaced by the language contained in the attachment entitled UNIVERSITY SENATE CONSTITUTION.
Second Reading: Debatable and eligible for final vote at this meeting. By past practice, constitutional amendments are not amendable on the Senate floor; rather, substantive concerns are referred to the initiating body, in this case the Graduate Council. If approved at this meeting, the amendment will be subjected to a constitutionally mandated general referendum.
b. Corollary Motion to establish a new standing committee (Moved, Mr. Feeman; Seconded, Ms. Gerulaitis):
MOVED that the Senate establish a standing committee called the Graduate Council, the charge and membership of which are specified in the attachment entitled UNIVERSITY SENATE - NEW STANDING COMMITTEE.
Second Reading: Debatable, amendable, and eligible for final vote at this meeting.
B. New Business:
1. Motion from the Steering Committee to fill vacancies in certain standing committees (Ms. Eberwein):
MOVED that the following persons be named to the committees and positions indicated below for 1983-84:
a. Professor Oded Izraeli to be appointed to membership on the Academic Policy and Planning Committee;
b. Professor Robert Gaylor to be designated chair of the Academic Conduct Committee and Professor Dean Purcell to be appointed to membership on that body;
c. Professor Linda Hildebrand to be designated chair of the Admissions and Financial Aid Committee,
d. Professor David Sidaway to be designated chair of the Teaching and Learning Committee and Professor Robert Schwartz to be appointed to membership on that committee;
and
e. Professor David Shantz to serve as chair of the University Committee on Undergraduate Instruction.
Procedural Motion: Debatable, amendable, and eligible for final vote at this meeting.
Comment: Most of these assignments replace persons who, citing the press of business or other constraining circumstances, have resigned their posts. Professor Gregory has withdrawn from the APPC; Professor Hamilton, while continuing to serve on the Admissions and Financial Aid Committee, craves release from the chairmanship; Professor Gorlin has resigned both as member and chair of the Academic Conduct Committee; and Professor Splete has done likewise with respect to the Teaching and Learning Committee. The chair of UCUI is always designated by the Senate from the membership of the APPC.
