2.  Motion to recommend the establishment of a Ph.D. program in the Cellular Biology of Aging (Mr. Russell, Mr. Sevilla)  Second reading.  Approved.

Mr. Feeman called the meeting to order at 3:10. The minutes of the April 14 meeting were approved as distributed upon the motion of Mr. Eliezer, seconded by Mr. Copenhaver.

The single item of old business was the second reading of the motion to recommend the establishment of a Ph.D. program in the Cellular Biology of Aging. (Moved, Mr. Russell. Seconded, Mr. Sevilla.)

MOVED that the University Senate recommend to the President and the Board of Trustees the establishment of a program leading to the Doctor of Philosophy in the Cellular Biology of Aging as specified in a "Proposal for a Program Leading to a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in the Cellular Biology of Aging," with implementation being contingent upon the availability of adequate resources.

Mr. Feeman then asked Mr. Akers of the Senate Steering Committee to chair this portion of the meeting. Mr. Feeman explained that since the motion concerned a graduate program and emanated from the Graduate Council, as Dean of the Graduate School he did not feel it was appropriate for him to preside over the deliberations. Mr. Akers called for discussion of the motion. Hearing none, the question was called and the motion was speedily and unanimously approved.

Mr. Feeman resumed the chair and as there were no further items of business the Senate adjourned at 3:17.

Respectfully submitted,
Linda L. Hildebrand
Secretary to the University Senate
