Procedural Motion: Debatable, amendable and eligible for vote at this meeting.
Comments: The Steering Committee received 68 preference sheets from faculty interested in serving on Senate Standing Committees. Once again, the Committee has tried to satisfy as many as possible within the severe constraints of the system. On the one hand, three seats were vacant on the Research Committee; twenty faculty put this committee down as first preference. On the other hand, two seats were open on the Academic Standing and Honors Committee and no one listed this body as first preference. Steering Committee regrets it was unable to satisfy a greater number of colleagues, but in this game it is inevitable that many call, but few are answered. It should be pointed out, however, that twenty-five faculty responded to the call for volunteers for University Congress and the Campus and Student Affairs Committees. Perhaps some of the passion to serve will find outlet in this direction.
C. Good and Welfare: Private Resolutions
D. Information Items:
1. Report from UCUI.
At the Senate meeting of October 19, 1978, Mr. Williamson offered a Resolution as follows:
That the hours between 12:00 noon and 2 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays be free of scheduled classes: The Steering Committee is to direct consideration of this resolution to the appropriate committee(s).
The Steering Committee referred the Williamson Resolution to the University Committee on Undergraduate Instruction. That Committee wishes to report its findings and recommendation in this matter as follows:
MEMORANDUM
April 11, 1979
To: George T. Matthews, Vice Provost
From: John Barnard, Chairman , University Committee for Undergraduate Instruction
At its meeting of April 10, 1979, the UCUI considered the suggestion referred to it from the Steering Committee, to extend the period on Tuesdays and Thursdays when no classes are held from noon to 1:00 p.m. to noon to 2:00 p.m. Under this proposal no class could begin on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons until 2:00 p.m. Sentiment among students, as revealed by an informal but extensive survey conducted by a member of Student Congress and by discussions and the passage of a resolution by the Congress, strongly favors maintaining the present arrangement. Although many students and members of the committee as well acknowledge the potential educational benefits that might be derived from such an extended period, the cost to formal instruction in loss of the use of classrooms at one of the most popular (with both students and faculty) times for classes is too great to pay. By one informed estimate, classroom usage would be reduced 10-15 percent by this proposal. This would result in classes being unavailable at a highly desirable and convenient time for students and faculty, greater scheduling pressures on the remaining modules, and possible losses in enrollment. For these reasons the committee respectfully recommends that no change be made.
2. This is the ninth and final meeting of the University .Senate for the 1978-1979 session and the nineteenth and final meeting for the 1977-1979 term. The Senate has handled a great deal of important business during the session and term and should be congratulated on the good humored dispatch with which it has conducted its business. The Steering Committee thanks you.
For those members who by reason of constant reelection or by virtue of office might be regarded as career legislators, the following schedule of regular 1979-1980 Senate meetings will be of interest:
September 13
October 18
November 15
December 6
For those not so favored, the pleasure of escape should prove sufficient consolation.
