A. Old Business

1. From the Agenda of March 29, 1979, unamended motion from UCUI and CHS concerning raising of degree credit limit for the BS in Medical Technology from 128 to 136 (Moeller/Jones).

Second Reading: Debatable, amendable and eligible for final vote at this meeting.

Comments: Kindly refer to the Agenda of March 29, 1979 for the fu11 motion.

2. From the Agenda of March 29, 1979, unamended motion from APPC and the Provost concerning power of primary appointment of faculty in the Institute of Biological Sciences (Obear/Jones).

Second Reading: Debatable, amendable and eligible for final vote at this meeting.

B. New Business

1. Motion from the Graduate Council (Mr. Johnson).

MOVED THAT THE SENATE RECOMMEND TO THE PRESIDENT AND THE BOARD THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A PROGRAM OF GRADUATE STUDIES LEADING TO THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE IN APPLIED MATHEMATICS, EFFECTIVE UPON AUTHORIZATION BY APPROPRIATE AGENCIES OF THE STATE.

First Reading: Debatable, amendable but not eligible for final vote at this meeting.

Comments:
1. The motion before the Senate is sponsored by the Graduate Council, the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Mr.
Johnson, Dean of the Graduate School, and Mr. Chipman, of the Department of Mathematical Sciences, will be prepared to answer questions.
2. The proposal to establish the Master of Science in Applied Mathematics has been reviewed and approved by the Academic Policy and Planning Committee.
3. The full and detailed proposal may be found in the Office of the Graduate School. Attached to this Agenda is a summary (distributed to Senators only) of the full proposal containing all essential information in shortened form.

3. Motion from the Center for Health Sciences (Mr. Heubel).

MOVED THAT THE SENATE RECOMMEND TO THE PRESIDENT AND THE BOARD THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A PROGRAM OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES LEADING TO THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN INDUSTRIAL HEALTH AND SAFETY EFFECTIVE FALL, 1979 WITH THE FOLLOWING DEGREE REQUIREMENTS:

1. SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF (36 CREDITS:
    a. MAJOR CREDITS (IHS) 52
    b. REQUIRED BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, MATHEMATICS AND PHYSICS 28
    c. REQUIRED OPTIONS 16
    d. GENERAL EDUCATION 24
    e. LEARNING SKILLS 4-8
    f. FREE ELECTIVES 8
2. SATISFACTION OF ALL GENERAL UNIVERSITY DEGREE REQUIREMENTS.

First Reading: Debatable, amendable but not eligible for final vote at this meeting.

Comments:
1. The proposal to establish an undergraduate degree program in Industrial Health and Safety has been under development for several years under the governance of the Center for Health Sciences. Funding for planning which carries with it legislative authorization for the program has already been provided by the state. Further support is expected to be forthcoming through the appropriation process. The proposal has been developed under the authority of the Center for Health Sciences, by Mr. Moon J. Pak, and Mr. Uwe Reischl who has been appointed Associate Professor of Industrial Health and Safety and Director of the program. Mr. Pak will be prepared to answer any questions.
2. This proposal to establish an undergraduate program in Industrial Health and Safety has been reviewed and approved by the Academic Policy and Planning Committee. The full proposal is attached to this Agenda but has been distributed to Senators only.

C. Good and Welfare: Private Resolutions

D. Information Items:
1. The final meeting of the Senate this term and session will be held on Thursday, April 19, 1979 at 3:15 p.m., 128-130 Oakland Center. New Business will consist in a procedural motion from the Steering Committee nominating faculty to seats on Senate Standing Committees.

Kindly make the following corrections to New Business, Item 3, Page 3.
1. Successful completion of 136 credits:
a. Major Credits (IHS) CHANGE TO; 48
b. Required Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics CHANGE TO: 32
The credit requirements and distribution as given in the Proposal for IHS (attached to Agenda), Page 9, is correct, while the statement on the Agenda is wrong.
