2. The proposal to establish an M. A. program in Linguistics has the endorsement of the College of Arts and Sciences and has been reviewed and endorsed for presentation to the Senate by the Academic Policy and Planning Committee.
3. The full and detailed proposal may be found in the Office of Graduate Studies. Attached to this agenda is a summary (distributed to Senators only) of the full proposal containing all essential information in shortened form.
C. Special Business
At the request of the President, the Steering Committee places the attached Oakland University Role and Mission Statement before the University Senate for
discussion.
Comments:
1. The Statement is not being presented as a motion of endorsement at this time, for it is still in draft form subject to modification in response to suggestions resulting from the discussion. The Statement is also being presented similarly for discussion and suggestions to the UPC, the Steering Committee, the APPC and the UCUI, the AP Assembly and the University Congress. Prepared in initial draft by a subcommittee (Messrs. De Carlo, Johnson, Matthews and Wilson) of the President's Administrative Council, (which includes the Provost, the Vice Provost and all academic deans), the present draft, approved by the Administrative Council has been written by the President in response to criticisms of an earlier version presented at an open hearing held 1/6/78, with the assistance of the original subcommittee.
2. This Statement is one of several related documents resulting from the planning process which has been underway for some time. It is prefatory to the various University Management by Objectives (MBO) documents covering the 1978-1983 short-term future currently being prepared by the various Divisions, the several college/schools/centers and their subunits and to the University Planning Document (UPD-78) covering the 1982-1992 long-term future which is now nearing final draft form. The latter document will also be presented to the Senate for discussion.
3. The Role and Mission Statement, the 1978-1983 MBOs and the 1978 University Planning Document will form the core of the University Self-Study (supplemented by additional background information) required by the North Central Association as part of the reaccreditation process which the University is now involved in. There is some pressure of time since the full University Self-Study is due in at NCA May 1. With luck and pluck we'll not miss the deadline by much, if at all.
