AGENDA
Submitted by George T. Matthews, for the Steering Committee
A. Old Business:
None
B. New Business:
1. Motion from the Academic Standing and Honors Committee (Mr. Chipman)
MOVED THAT THE SENATE APPROVE THE FOLLOWING ADDENDUM TO THE ACADEMIC PROBATION AND DISMISSAL POLICY DATED OCTOBER 20, 1975.
(To Section II, add:)
Stipulations for students readmitted to the University after October, 1977:
a) Upon recommendation of the Committee on Academic Standing and Honors a student who has been absent for three or more years will have his/her academic standing determined as would a student who transferred to the University at the time of his/her readmission. The previous credits earned at Oakland University will be considered as transfer credits in all computations which determine this student's academic standing.
b) All other students will have their academic standing determined under whichever of the above stipulations is appropriate.
First Reading; debatable, amendable, but not eligible for final vote at this meeting.
Comments: The main intent of this addendum is to permit the committee to grant certain students a clean slate in their renewed attempt to earn a degree. It should be noted that the computations referred to are only those made by the committee for the purposes of determining academic standing. Mr. Chipman doubts that there would ever be more than fifty students in this category.
2. Motion from the Athletics Committee (Mr. Jackson)
RESOLVED THAT THE SENATE SUPPORT THE MARCH 1977, POSITION STATEMENT OF THE ATHLETICS COMMITTEE (ATTACHMENT 1)
First Reading: debatable, amendable, but not eligible for final vote at his meeting.
Comments: For comments we quote directly from Mr. Glenn Jackson's letter of April 6, 1977 to the Steering Committee:
"On January 20, 1977, I gave an oral report to the Senate regarding the business of the Athletics Committee. During the discussion following the report, the Senate requested the Athletics Committee to review all Senate legislation dealing with athletics. This memo is in response to that request.
As far as could be ascertained, only one piece of legislation dealing with athletics has ever been passed by the Senate. That legislation was passed over eleven years ago. After considerable discussion, it was decided that the appropriate action by this committee would be to inform the Senate as to what the present Athletics Committee sees as its areas of concern. This would then allow the Senate to determine if the committee is correctly interpreting its charge.
The attached position statement was approved by the Athletics Committee on April 1, 1977, and outlines what we feel are our duties and responsibilities We hope that this is a satisfactory response to the Senate's request of January 20."
3. Motion from the Campus Development and Environment Committee (Mr. Gaylor)
RESOLVED THAT THE SENATE RECOMMEND TO THE PRESIDENT AND THE BOARD THE FOLLOWING POLICIES GOVERNING THE PRESERVATION OF NATURAL AREA I AS DESCRIBED IN PROPOSED POLICY PAPER ON CAMPUS LAND RESERVED FOR NATURE AREAS DATED NOVEMBER 2, 1977, ATTACHMENT II)
Specific Policies Governing: the Preservation of Natural Area I
1. Area I is designated as the Oakland University Natural Land and Habitat Number 1.
2. All proposals for development or modifications of any kind to the land, vegetation, water or wildlife inherent in Area I are subject to review by the Campus Environment and Development Committee.
3. This Committee will review all such proposals with the criterion of balancing the need to preserve the natural stability of the land, water, and habitat with the needs of the campus community for access to the land for education, research, and limited recreation. Any proposal for development or modification must show that it serves one or more of these three purposes.
4. The University, given adequate funds, will mark trails, make public announcements, post notices, maintain security and take such other actions to assure the continued stability and value of Area I.
5. The University will communicate to the owners of the Seyburn Estate Community and to the Pontiac Township (appropriate body) at the most propitious time our wish to see the wetland, creek bed, and adjoining hillsides of Galloway Creek as undisturbed as possible, and surface run-off minimized or controlled. In support of this request, the university will continue to maintain the parcel of Area I that lies west of Squirrel Road, releasing it to other ownership only under the condition that its wetland and streambed will remain undisturbed.
First reading; debatable, amendable but not eligible for final vote at this meeting.
Comments: The Steering Committee places this on the agenda at the request of the Campus Development and Environment Committee.
