Oakland University Senate

Second Meeting
Thursday, October 20, 1977
3:00 p.m.
128-130 Oakland Center

AGENDA

Submitted by George T. Matthews, for the Steering Committee.

A. Old Business:

1. Motion (Felton/Tower) to approve the Constitution of the School of Nursing.

Second Reading; debatable and eligible for final vote at this meeting.

Comment:
1. A perfected version of the Constitution of the School of Nursing is attached. (Senators copies only)
2. The Senate may debate,  but not amend the proposed Constitution.

B.. New Business:

1. Motion from the University Committee on Undergraduate Instruction (Mr. Moeller)

MOVED THAT THE LAST DATE FOR ADDING A COURSE BE THE END OF THE FOURTH WEEK OF INSTRUCTION DURING FALL AND WINTER SEMESTERS AND THE END OF THE SECOND WEEK OF INSTRUCTION DURING SPRING AND SUMMER TERMS.

First Reading- debatable amendable, but not eligible for final vote at this meeting.

Comment:
1. Current policy permits addition of courses at any time during a semester, subject to the approval of the course instructor and the payment of a late-add fee after the second week (first week during spring and summer) of classes. Adoption of this motion would insure that students stabilize their academic programs sufficiently early in the semester to provide reasonable chances for academic success, to pay appropriate tuition for all instruction received, and to permit the university to receive state assistance for all instruction rendered.
2. This motion has been noted by the Academic Policy and Planning Committee.

2. Motion from the Steering Committee (Ms. Eberwein)

RESOLVED THAT THE UNIVERSITY SENATE VOTE AYE OR NAY THAT SMOKING BE PROHIBITED WHILE THE SENATE IS IN FORMAL MEETINGS.

Procedural Motion- debatable, amendable and eligible for final vote at this meeting.

Comment: This motion is placed on the agenda at the suggestion of several Senators and is supported by the Steering Committee.  Smoking is to be interpreted to mean also the carrying of lighted smoking materials, whether of tobacco or other substance.  Snorting or chewing tobacco would not be included in the ban, but the common codes of public decorum and cleanliness would be enforced in these cases.
