1st Meeting
September 28, 1972

MINUTES

PRESENT: A quorum
ABSENT: Ms. Gerulaitis, Jeckling, Tripp, White; Messrs. J. Appleton, Barnard, Beardman, Cherno, Dahlmann, Gibson, Hetenyi, Hough, Howes, Marz, Riley, Sturner, and Susskind.

President O'Dowd called the meeting to order at 4:10 p.m. He announced the continuing appointment of Professor Edward Heubel as Parliamentarian and the appointment of Robert Bunger as Secretary of the Senate. Mr. O'Dowd also announced the substitution of Messrs. Gardiner, Kilburn, and Torch for Messrs. Gaylor, Kent, and Matthews, respectively, in ex officio seats. Replacements to elected seats were announced as: Messrs. Evans, Kleckner and Bricker for Messrs. Haskell, Hill and Cafone, respectively.

A. OLD BUSINESS

None

B. NEW BUSINESS

* I. a) Mr. Harding moved "That motions b and c be approved for final vote at this meeting.'' Seconded by Mr. Heubel. Approved.

* b) Mr. Harding moved "That the faculty of Oakland University nominate for the Bachelor's Degree, conferred as of June 25 1972, the students named on ths list to be distributed at this meeting.'' (List attached to official copy of minutes.) Seconded by Mr. Mascitelli. Approved.

* c) Mr. Harding moved 'That University and Departmental Honors be awarded to the graduating seniors named on the lists distributed at the meeting, with the amendment that two students originally listed in the Summa Cum Laude category be recommended for graduation Magna Cum Laude." (Corrected lists are attached to the official copy of these minutes.) Seconded by Mr. Coon. Approved.

2. Mr. Kleckner nominated Mr. David Evans to fill the empty School of Engineering seat on the Steering Committee. Mr. Coon nominated Mr. Sidney Graber to fill the vacant School of Education seat on the Steering Committee. Mr. Evans and Mr. Graber were both appointed by acclamation.

3. Mr. Obear reported briefly on activities of the Steering Committee and distributed copies of the Steering Committee secretary's memo of August 18 entitled "Summary of procedures to be followed in case
of classroom disruption'', which memo had previously been distributed to all faculty. (A copy of this memorandum is attached to the official copy of these minutes.)

In addition to discussing this item, Mr. Obear also commented on the following:

a) Ombudsman's Report on Activities

b) Inordinate delays in the approval of graduation lists, and a request to the Academic Standing and Honors Committee to make recommendations for improvement.

c) A project to update the Constitution of the University Senate to reflect changes in University organization.

d) A request for standing committee reports.

e) The upcoming Steering Committee task of making Senate committee replacements.

f) Restatement of policies and procedures from the Academic Conduct Committee.

4. Mr. Graber's motion to adjourn was seconded by Mr. Coon and adjournment occurred at 4:50 p.m.
