May 12, 1970

MINUTES

PRESENT: Messrs. Akers, J. Appleton, Barthel, Beardman, Briod, Burdick, Butler, Cherno, Cramer, Davis, Dovaras, Harding, Haskell, Hetenyi, Heubel, Hildum, Iodice, Phil Johnson, Kent, Mascitelli, Matthews, McKay, Obear, O'Dowd, Righter, Rue, Seeber, Simmons, Stoutenburg, Susskind, Swanson, Tipler, Torch, Torgoff, Witt.
ABSENT: Messrs. Burke, Dutton, Fernald, Gerulaitis. Gibson, Good, P.J. Johnson, Kleckner, Letvin, Miss Mattis, Messrs. Springfield, Stern.

Chancellor O'Dowd called the meeting to order at 3:20 p.m.

Mr. Haskell reintroduced the recommendation of the Admissions and Financial Aids Committee Items A 4 a, b, c, d, e of the April 16 agenda previously seconded by Mr. Briod.

Mr. Haskell reviewed for the Senate the thinking of the Admissions and Financial Aids Committee during the past year as background for the motion. Mr. Haskell, in answer to a question regarding the percentage of new students to be black, stated that the 15 per cent was considered by the Committee as a guideline and not a quota.

* Mr. McKay moved to amend Item 4 d 4 by adding a second sentence to read as follows:

"STUDENTS WITH LESS THAN 24 CREDIT HOURS OR LESS THAN AN ACCUMULATIVE GPA OF 2.0 MAY APPLY TO THE ACADEMIC STANDING AND HONORS COMMITTEE FOR REGULAR ADMISSION."

Seconded by Mr. Seeber. Approved.

* Mr. Cherno reintroduced his amendment of April 9, seconded by Mr. Davis, to replace the period at the end of the second sentence of Item 4 b 3 of the April 16 agenda with a comma and add the following phrase:

"AND IN ADDITION INSURE AN INCREASED ADMISSION TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MEMBERS OF OTHER MINORITY GROUPS TRADITIONALLY DISADVANTAGED."

Approved.

Mr. Heubel moved to amend Item 4 b of the April 16 agenda by adding an item 5 to read as follows:

"(5) The Chancellor's office and the Admissions office should ascertain the extent to which the community colleges can be utilized as a means of increasing the proportions of  disadvantaged students in our student body. To the greatest degree possible, the goals of this report should be met by the recruitment and admission to Oakland of students who have succeeded in community colleges and who have an interest in and an aptitude for the academic and professional programs of this University."

Seconded by Mr. Susskind.

Chancellor O'Dowd recessed this meeting at 5:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. May 13, 1970.
