MINUTES
PRESENT: Miss Attwood, Messrs. Atkinson, Cafone, Cherno, Davis, Dutton, Hetenyi, Iodice, Kleckner, Linsalata, Matthews, McKay, O'Dowd, Pino, Simmons, Stoutenburg, Swanson, Tomboulian, Torch, Vann, Witt.
ABSENT: Messrs. S. Appleton, Black, Briod, Butler, Clarke, Fernald, Galloway, Gerulaitis, Gibson, Hahn, Hammerle, Harding, Hildum, P. Johnson, W. Kent, Lowy, Lyons, Mittra, Pitts, Righter, Schwab, Susskind, Williamson, Yennior, Mrs. White.
Chancellor Varner called the meeting to order at 3:45 p.m.
The Chancellor took the first 20 minutes talking about the following topics of interest to the Senate:
1. The Search and Selection process being followed for the new President.
2. The highlights of the Board of Trustees meeting regarding funds for disadvantaged students and the new Urban Center.
3. The tax credits for donations to the University.
4. The Osteopathic College progress.
5. The Wilson Hall incident at MSU.
Mr. Linsalata moved to accept the minutes of April 17, 1969. Seconded by Mr. Simmons. The secretary was requested to correct the typographical and wording errors in the adopted motion regarding the UC 064 Introduction to Africa course. The motion, as adopted, should read as follows:
UC 064, ENTITLED "INTRODUCTION TO AFRICA," IS APPROVED FOR INCORPORATION IN THE OAKLAND UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM AND FOR LISTING IN THE UNIVERSITY CATALOG. THE COURSE, DESCRIBED BELOW, MAY BE TAKEN TO FULFILL THE UNIVERSITY DISTRIBUTION REQUIREMENT IN NON-WESTERN CIVILIZATIONS.
UC 064: INTRODUCTION TO AFRICA
AN INTRODUCTION TO THE GEOGRAPHY AND ECOLOGY OF AFRICA, AND ITS HISTORY AND CULTURES OF AFRICAN PEOPLES. ATTENTION WILL BE DIRECTED ALSO TO SOCIAL ORGANIZATIONS: ECONOMICS, POLITICAL AND RELIGIOUS SYSTEMS: AND PROBLEMS OF SOCIAL CHANGE.
The minutes were then approved.
OLD BUSINESS
The Admissions and Financial Aids Committees recommendation, moved by Miss Attwood on April 17, requesting the Senate to change the grade point average needed for renewal of financial aid, seconded by Mr. McKay, was reintroduced for final action.
During the ensuing discussion, Mr. Hetenyi asked that the record show that he reported Mr. Schwab's opposition to this motion.
* "ALL STUDENTS RECEIVING FINANCIAL AID MAY HAVE THEIR AID RENEWED ON AN ANNUAL BASIS PROVIDED THEIR GRADE POINT AVERAGE IS A MINIMUM OF 2.0 OR HIGHER."
The motion was adopted.
Mr. McKay moved the recommendation of the Academic Standing and Honors Committee that
* "THE THREE MOTIONS PRESENTED BELOW BE APPROVED FOR FINAL VOTE AT THIS MEETING."
Seconded by Mr. Linsalata. Adopted.
Mr. McKay moved the recommendation of the Academic Standing and Honors Committee that
* "THE FACULTY OF OAKLAND UNIVERSITY NOMINATE FOR THE BACHELOR'S DEGREE, CONFERRED AS OF APRIL 19, 1969, THE STUDENTS NAMED IN THE LIST DISTRIBUTED AT THIS MEETING." (See attached list).
Seconded by Mr. Tomboulian. Adopted.
Mr. McKay moved the recommendation of the Academic Standing and Honors Committee that
* "THE FACULTY OF OAKLAND UNIVERSITY NOMINATE FOR THE MASTER'S DEGREE, CONFERRED AS OF APRIL 19, 1969, THE STUDENTS NAMED IN THE LIST DISTRIBUTED AT THIS MEETING." (See attached list).
Seconded by Miss Attwood. Adopted.
Mr. McKay moved the recommendation of the Academic Standing and Honors Committee that
* "UNIVERSITY HONORS BE AWARDED TO THE GRADUATING STUDENTS NAMED IN THE LIST DISTRIBUTED AT THIS MEETING." (See attached list).
Seconded by Mr. Linsalata.
Mr. McKay pointed out that Miss Elaine Violet Henderson was moved from Magna Cum Laude to Summa Cum Laude based on her accumulative grade point average at the end of the winter semester. After a brief discussion, Mr. McKay amended the motion to list Miss Henderson for Magna Cum Laude.
The motion was adopted.
Mr. Vann moved the meeting be adjourned. Seconded by Mr. Linsalata.
