October 10, 1967

MINUTES

PRESENT: Messrs. Appleton, Atkinson, Burdick, Burke, Cafone, Cherno, Davis, Dutton, Galloway, Gerulaitis, Gibson, Hahn, Hammerle, Harding, Hetenyi, Hoopes, Howes, lodice, Johnson, Kleckner, Langer, Linsalata, Lyons, Matthews, McKay, Norris, O'Dowd, Pino, Righter, Shank, Stoutenburg, Susskind, Tomboulian, Torch, Varner, White.
ABSENT: Messrs. Butler, Fernald, Hough, Kent, Lowy, Swanson, Williamson.

Chancellor Varner called the meeting to order at 3:40 p.m.

Mr. Hetenyi moved to accept the minutes of May 9, August 10, and August 17. Seconded by Mr. Righter. Motion approved.

NEW BUSINESS

Mr. Johnson, Chairman of the Election Committee, read the following excerpt from the Constitution of Oakland University to be the guidelines for electing the 1967-69 Steering Committee:

"The University Senate shall have a Steering Committee, composed of the Provost of the University, who shall serve as chairman, and six other senators elected at the first Senate meeting of the fall semester. The Committee's term of office shall be two years. At least one senator from the College of Arts and Sciences, one from the School of Engineering, and one from the School of Education shall sit on the committee, and no more than three seats shall be held by senators from any one faculty."

Mr. Johnson handed out ballots for the election of a Steering Committee. Messrs. Matthews, Hetenyi, and Gibson asked to have their names withdrawn from
the ballot.

Those elected are as follows:
Philip Johnson, College of Arts and Sciences
Reuben Torch, College of Arts and Sciences
Robert Williamson, College of Arts and Sciences
Roderic Righter, School of Education
William Hammerle, School of Engineering
Thomas Atkinson, Other Affiliations.

OLD BUSINESS

Mr. O'Dowd reported the spring semester Senate activities as follows:

On August 10, fifteen members of the Senate met and gave initial approval to a list of candidates for masters and bachelors degrees. In addition, eleven students were awarded University honors, and 26 students were awarded departmental honors.

A second meeting of the Senate was held on August 17, with five senators present and voting. At this meeting four students were nominated for the M.A., eight students for the M.A.T., one for the M.S., and 92 for the bachelors degree.

GENERAL DISCUSSION

Mr. McKay asked whether the duties of the Steering Committee, as described in the Constitution, provide for the Steering Committee to name the Senate Committees, draft charges and propose a slate of nominees.. Mr. O'Dowd answered that this was the responsibility of the Steering Committee.

Chancellor Varner reported the conditions of Mrs. Wilson's will and listed the several suggestions for use of the Meadow Brook property.

Mr. Dutton described the students' procedure for electing candidates to the Senate.

Chancellor Varner answered Mr. Burdick's question about the present status of the Commission on Student Life.

Meeting adjourned at 4:20 p.m.
