April 18, 1967

MINUTES

PRESENT: Messrs. Butler, Brace, M. Brown, Hildum, Burke, Collins, DiChiera, Dutton, Gibson, Haden, Beardslee, Harding, Hetenyi, Heubel, Hammerle, Johnson, Lowy, Malm, Matthews, Mobley, O'Dowd, Simmons, Stoutenburg, Stubblefield, Moeller, Tipler, Tomboulian, Torch, Varner
ABSENT: Messrs. Booth, G. Brown, Cameron, Hough, Lyons, Marz, Sargent, Swanson, Vann, Williamson
GUESTS: Messrs. Atkinson, Linsalata, Obear and Sullivan

Chancellor Varner called the meeting to order at 3:45 p.m.

Mr. Stoutenburg discussed the procedures to be used by the faculty for the Fifth Annual Commencement.

Chancellor Varner described the situation regarding the appropriation and tax legislation.

Mr. Heubel moved to accept the minutes of the April 13, meeting of the Senate. Seconded by Mr. Stubblefield. Approved.

NEW BUSINESS

Mr. Hetenyi moved to make eligible for vote today items A l a, b, and c of the agenda. Seconded by Mr. Simmons. Approved.

Mr. Dutton moved the recommendation of the committee on Academic Standing and Baccalaureate Honors "that the potential graduates named in a list to be distributed at the meeting be authorized to participate in the Fifth Spring Commencement on Saturday, April 22, 1967." Seconded by Mr. Hildum.

Mr. Hetenyi asked if there were any students on the list with less than a 2.0 g.p.a. or less than 124 earned credits. Mr. Atkinson answered that there were none known to him at this time, but he pointed out that this may change because all grades would not be available for another two days. He stated further that this motion was not to approve candidates for graduation but to authorize participation in the Fifth Annual Commencement. The approval of candidates for graduation would be decided in May.

The motion was then approved.

Mr. Marz moved the recommendation of the committee on Academic Standing and Baccalaureate Honors "that Departmental Honors be awarded contingent upon the award of the degree in accordance with the departmental recommendations contained in the list to be distributed at the meeting." Seconded by Mr. Dutton.

Mr. Tomboulian asked for a listing by departments of the number of students receiving departmental honors. Mr. Marz explained the procedure used and read off the number of candidates per department receiving honors.

The motion was then approved.

Mr. Marz moved the recommendation of the committee on Academic Standing and Baccalaureate Honors "that University Honors be awarded contingent upon the award of the degree to the graduates named in the list to be distributed at the meeting. Seconded by Mr. Dutton.

Mr. Marz explained the procedure used to determine the University Honors and indicated the range for each group - summa, magna, and cum. It was pointed out that the next two students on the list might fall in the University Honor category if their final grades were high enough.

Mr. Hetenyi moved to amend the motion that the two students' g.p.a.'s be recalculated when their final grades are in and add their names to the University Honors list if appropriate. Seconded by Mr. Marz. Approved.

The motion with the amendment was then approved.

Meeting adjourned at 4:45 p.m.
