MINUTES
PRESENT: Messrs. Butler, Brown, G, Brown, M., Hildum, Burke, Cameron, Collins, DiChiera, Gibson, Harding, Hetenyi, Heubel, Hammerle, Hough, Johnson, Lowy, Malm, Matthews, Mobley, O'Dowd, Stoutenburg, Stubblefield, Moeller, Torch, Varner, Williamson

Chancellor Varner called the meeting to order at 3:45 p.m.
Chancellor Varner reported on his impressions of the progress of Michigan fiscal reform and state appropriations. He also reported on the North Central accreditation of our graduate program and the National Science Foundation team that recently visited our campus.
Mr. M. Brown moved to accept the minutes of the February 9, meeting of the Senate. Seconded by Mr. Stubblefield. Not approved.
Mr. O'Dowd moved to correct the wording regarding the action of Mr. Marz's motion under Old Business on page 2 of the minutes of February 9, Senate Meeting.
"Mr. Marz moved that the subject of revising the Oakland University grading system be returned to the Academic Affairs Committee with the instruction that the committee study and recommend the use of A, B, C, D, and F. Seconded by Mr. Hetenyi. Not approved."
Following a general discussion of this subject, there were a series of advisory but inconclusive motions concerning this subject. It was generally agreed to return the matter to the Academic Affairs Committee.
Seconded by Mr. Brown. Approved.
Mr. Brown moved to accept the minutes of the February 9, meeting as amended. Seconded by Mr. Stubblefield. Approved.
Mr. Brown moved to accept the minutes of the March 21, meeting of the Senate. Seconded by Mr. Stubblefield. Not approved.
Mr. O'Dowd moved to correct the wording of Mr. Tomboulian's amendment to the motion regarding the "P" grade under old business on page one of the minutes of March 21, Senate meeting.
"All courses which are to use the grade of "P" must have the prior approval of the Committee on Instruction."
Seconded by Mr. Burke, Approved.
Mr. Brown moved to accept the minutes of the March 21, meeting as amended. Seconded by Mr. Stubblefield. Approved.
OLD BUSINESS
Mr. Matthews moved to return to committee the recommendation of the Long-Range Planning Committee to establish a General Studies program at Oakland University, with the understanding that the issue would be returned to the Senate in fall of 1967. Seconded by Mr. Burke. Motion approved.
Mr. Burke reintroduced his March 21, motion, seconded by Mr. O'Dowd, to make the following insertion in the catalog under "Requirements for Bachelor's Degree" as a footnote to item 1.
*A student may count no more than 4 one-credit courses toward the bachelor's degree except in his major field and co-requisite courses.
Mr. Hetenyi moved the following amendment:
A student may count toward graduation four one-credit courses of those that are of a repeatable nature only after the first three semesters.
Seconded by Mr. Heubel. Not approved.
Mr. M. Brown moved the following amendment:
*A student may count no more than 8 one-credit courses toward the bachelor's degree except in his major field and co-requisite courses.
Seconded by Mr. Hildum. Not brought to vote.
Mr. Williamson moved to table amendment and main motion until the next meeting of the Senate. Seconded by Mr. Hildum. Approved.
Mr. Burke reintroduced his March 21, motion, seconded by Mr. Heubel, to establish a Concentration in Pre-medical Studies in the "Interdepartmental Programs and Courses" section of the catalog.
Mr. Hammerle moved to strike out the third sentence in the final paragraph of the main motion which reads:
Where necessary, University Course requirements or requirements for a particular major may be modified to accommodate the Premedical Studies Concentration.
Seconded by Mr. Malm. Approved.
Mr. Hetenyi moved the substitution of the following sentence in place of the sentence that was just removed.
In cases when the Premedical Advisory Committee deems it necessary, the substitution of Freshmen Exploratories and Senior Colloquia within the distribution requirement can be authorized according to existing university policy.
Seconded by Mr. O'Dowd. Approved.
Main motion as amended was then approved.
Mr. Burke reintroduced his March 21, motion, seconded by Mr. Malm, to add the following sentence at the end of the first paragraph in the catalog under "Major Standing and Requirements for Majors."
A student who has completed 72 or more credits and does not have major standing is not eligible to continue as an enrolled student except by special action of the Committee on Academic Standing.
Final action to be taken at a subsequent meeting.
